Not a good and bad games thread

Just more interested in what types/genres of games that you are good or bad at and whether you persist with trying to get better, or just stick to games you are good at.

And this isn't about if you think you are the best in the World, just general competence

Good at:

First Person Shooters - I grew up on Doom 2, Duke Nukem, Unreal etc so am comfortable playing these, even though I won't win any awards online.

Third Person action - Again, I played a lot of these from when these were in their infancy. Tomb Raider, Max Payne etc. Arkham games are one of my most replayed games.

RPG - I do love a game with a levelling or XP upgrade system. Balders Gate 3, Wasteland 3 are two I've played recently. Often games straddle First and Third person and RPG, such at The Witcher 3 or Fallout: New Vegas.

Turn Based Strategy - Probably one of my favourite genres going all the way back to UFO Enemy Unknown in 1994. I literally have spent 1000+ hours playing XCOM, XCOM 2, XCOM: Chimera Squad, Gears of War: Tactics, Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters, Jagged Alliance 3. Even Marvels Midnight suns, which has a great game in there unfortunately paired in an annoying Mansion and grounds central hub.

Bad at:

Fighting Games - I can never remember the combos, I just mash buttons. I've got no inclination to learn about frame data, invincibility windows etc. It's just something I know I'm not good at. The last one I really enjoyed was SoulCalibur on Dreamcast!

Real Time Strategy - I do enjoy these, but i'm not good at them. I grew up playing Dune 2: Battle for Arrakis, Command & Conquer, Red Alert and Starcraft, but my brain is terrible at multi-tasking. I didn't realise how bad I was at these until I played StarCraft over a LAN around the late 90's and got thrashed consistently by a friend.

Sports - Not interested in the genre.

Simulations - I'm lumping lots in here. Flight Simulators, Racing, City building etc games like Cities: Skylines 2 etc. All the marketing for Flight Simulator was getting my hyped for that release, but when it finally came out I was very bored once I got over the fact that I could fly over my home town.

I know I've left out plenty of other genres. Some I am ok at, so more indifferent too.

Probably not what you are really looking for, but here is one thing I am terrible at in games:

Stopping myself for looting absolutely everything I come across in RP games and hoarding it all. Like even every short sword worth 1gp in a game like Baldurs Gate must be collected and sold, or just amassing huge quantities of potions, ammo, resources and keeping them in a base and never using any of it. Like it is physically painful for me to use any special ammo in a game, or any potions other than regular heal potions. I *surely* must save all that for the very final boss. And even then you don't even need to. Every time I start a game with loot mechanics I'm like, *this* is the time, *this* is the game where I use stuff there and then. But nah, never happens.

When I was younger I was very good at RTS games, and FPS not far behind.

As I've aged I'm far worse at them, but got far better at RPGs and TBS.

I have always sucked at 3rd person games such as Tomb Raider etc.

Only three games I ever got really good at were games I was playing for several hours a day 7 days a week.

You just got better with tons of practice and I believe that anyone can get really good at a game if they put the hours in.

Call of duty zombies, call of duty modern warfare 2 deathmatches and gears of war 2 deathmatches.

Games I am terrible at are games like Starcraft 2 and cities skylines

My list matches yours apart from I wouldn't say I'm good at first person shooters but I enjoy them :)

Bad at? Probably don't get immersed as much: any Third Person RPG. It's just not 'me' there. First person always x

I also am guilty of this and to add to this I find it hard to just 'start' and game and enjoy the playthrough. I am always finding myself looking online to see if there are any missable items or side quests and wanting to make sure I don't miss these instead of just enjoying the runthrough

Good at

Games that don't require any attention span e.g. Nothing.

Bad at

Games that require any kind of attention span. e.g. Everything.

With how little time I get to play games these days (5 hours a week maybe?), I just can't be bothered to get into and learn anything new :(

So I just end up playing Counter Strike and wishing I could play like the pros but i'm old and bad. Currently around 11k elo which seems to be cheater/smurf hell at the moment so 60% of games are a waste of time anyway...

Nothing shall be left on the floor..... Like all potions you either have never enough or a gazillion doing nothing :)

Doesn't everyone do that

Hmmm, tbh pretty **** at everything now. Doesn't mean I don't enjoy it. Actually I'm pretty good at puzzle games with abstract puzzles or 'out of the box' thinking required, good fit for the way my brain is wired.

I don't get around to playing many games these days, so I'm massively out of practice for much of these types of games... but I reckon I could get back into the swing of one of the ones I'm good at with a bit of a binge session.

Games I'm good at:
  • RTS & grand strategy games - I mostly grew up on these so got pretty good at strategising and settling in for the long run.
  • RPGs - It's really hard to not be good at these, they're often extremely simple and are a simple case of grinding until you're overpowered.
  • FPS games - Used to play a lot of these in school and online with the older editions of Unreal Tournament, Quake, Call of Duty and Battlefield. I've not played one in a while but I think with a little practice I could do a decent job still.
  • Racing games - It's difficult to be bad at these, most of the time its just a case of managing acceleration as you take sharp corners.
  • Rogue-likes - I play quite a few of these and have gotten pretty good at dodging attacks in a small space while killing the targets. I've probably spent far too long in the Binding of Isaac and Tiny Rogues.
Games I'm bad at:
  • Souls-type games - This is mostly due to my lack enjoyment in learning boss patterns and the mechanics of rolling to evade attacks and perfectly timing counters to have the best experience. I mostly play to relax and a stressful and challenging fight is not going to do it for me. I think the only one that I did force myself to complete was Bloodborne, as I enjoyed the lore... the rest of them have had me rage quit a couple of bosses in.
  • Fighting games - Complicated combinations of buttons to pull off special moves is a little too much for my hands, I used to be okay with games like Soul Calibur and Tekken in the old days but lately don't do too well with online matches.
  • Puzzle games - I over-think things way too much, so my brain goes into total meltdown with puzzle games.
  • Flight games with combat - I'm reasonably good at the shooting part, but flying around at high speeds while shooting often results in me crashing into something or taking far too long to shoot down my target as I speed by them and have to loop back.
Really really bad at:
  • Finishing games! - I have a terrible habit of picking up a game, playing it for a little while and then forgetting all about it as I start playing something else.
