Games which support 5.1 DD

All source games.
Pretty much all modern games, specifically EA games...
Worms Armageddon
RA2 from the first decade pack.
Cod4 yes.
DMC4
...
...
80% of all games that have been out the the past 2 years...

Grid doesn't for me...

Could someone please recommend me an Intel board which supports 5.1 optical. My current 680i only supports the front two speakers and I am buying a Yamaha AV Package 63 system. I have had a look at the P45 boards however I am unsure of which support optical.

Thanks,

Johnny.

If you want 5.1 from games via an optical connection you will need a soundcard/onboard sound that has Dolby Digital Live (DDL) or DTS Connect (DTSC) support.

Most soundcards with optical out, unless specified otherwise, will only give you 2.0 sound via optical in Windows/games, and only give you surround from a DVD or other video files encoded with discrete multichannel audio.

People. 5.1 does not = 5.1 DOLBY DIGITAL!

5.1 DD is a PITA and forget it via any X-Fi cards without a separate adpation.

Newer cards can do it but otherwise you need to use the analogue connection if you want to seamlessly switch between 5.1 in movies and games.

This is very true, I have onboard sound via SPDIF to my AV REciever which decodes a 2.0 channel into Dolby Pro Logic 2. Dunno if DDL or DTSC is worth it for me?

So if I am understadning this correctly, I will not be able to achieve 5.1 from optical on a motherboard for the surround sound to work with games?

What will I need in order to achieve this? I am new to this so I hope you can help me!

Cheers.

For 5.1 gaming ive got a speaker system that plugs into the 3 analogue sockets on my 5.1 soundcard - one for surround speakers, one for sub and one for centre speaker.

btw most games support 5.1 these days. Some 7.1 and even 9.1.

What you plugin the opticial cable into AV REciever? or bog standard creative 5.1 set?

Yes, you can, providing the motherboard states that it supports Dolby Digital Live (DDL) or DTS Connect (DTSC). Not all do, you have to check that it explicitly states that it does.

If you cannot find a motherboard that does this, then you will need a separate sound card which supports DDL/DTSC.

Oh, just an addition - DDL could also be called "Dolby HomeTheatre Technologies" I believe.
