Games you keep playing over the big names

We are all familiar with games like Halo, Call of Duty, Forza Motorsport, Uncharted and such. These are the big massive games that the console developers want everyone to know about, and play. Last year was a huge year for games, and inevitably, a lot of people seem to forget about games whose gameplay still stand up there with the most played and mentioned big hitters. These are the games you still find time to play on every day while something like Halo quietly gathers dust. Everyone has one or two examples of this. Mine would be:

Street Fighter Alpha Anthology

A few regulars here will probably remember a thread I made a few months ago asking what the best console Street Fighter was. A lot of people pointed me towards this, and it's one of the best gaming purchases I've invested in a while. I pretty much play this everyday - there's something addictive about doing combos with Akuma and mastering the variable -ism ability. I can almost get all perfects on the hardest difficulty mode on Alpha 3, that's how much I've been playing it! Better fighter than Tekken: Dark Resurrection if you're looking for pure gameplay. It has no online play though. (The Xbox one does, but I don't think it's on the BC list unfortunately)

Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl

A few people will probably dispute that it's not a 'big' name per se, as it was one of the most anticipated PC games in years, with a Duke Nukem Forever-like development schedule. It eventually came out, generated a few hundred-page threads then suddenly died off as the flood of both PC and console shooters appeared on the scene. For all the Halos, Call of Duties, Cryses and Half Lives, I still go back to this one. It's the most open-ended FPS with the most options and self-management. Its atmosphere can't be matched anywhere else, and I still get the shivers everytime I go into the underground, or the Chernobyl nuclear power plant itself. Has a few flaws, such as needing a beefy computer to get dynamic lighting running smoothly - without this you lose 90% of the atmosphere, which is a great shame.

Warhawk

It is a common train of thought that Warhawk is the first great PS3 to come out. I remember playing the Halo 3 beta and hearing a lot that Warhawk beta testers found their equivelant a hell of a lot more fun. I dismissed such claims as preposterous and outlandish. I couldn't be more wrong if I tried - I must've played about 10-15 matches of Halo 3 online overall yet Warhawk stretches its wings every day. Not bad for an online-only game. I sometimes still struggle comprehending the jaggy-free graphics with absolutely no hitch in performance whatsoever. The Battlefield of consoles, and I hope it will remain popular for a long time to come - and I'm sure it will be, if the response to the recent expansion is anything to go by. There's still a lot of PS3 owners who haven't even considered buying Warhawk, and they're insane in my book.

One of my mates had LMA 2005 on his Xbox, and he put in a staggering amount of hours into it. I watched him play it for a while, but I couldn't understand what he was doing. It was all menus and statistics and such. I suppose it's engrossing to actually be a manager for your favourate club and see them go to success... when I tried it I somehow managed to get Manchester United relegated :p

Eye of the Beholder series - love them and keep going back to run through them roughly once a year.

I never really got into Stalker, I tried my best as it looked like the sort of game I usually enjoy so much but just never really found my way with it. Will try again soon though :p

In terms of games I've played this year, there haven't actually been that many.

Super Paper Mario wasn't really given any marketing over here, and not many people talked about it on here. I still play that from time to time as it is a really class game. The humour in it can be very good as well, plus the 2D/3D thing is very cleverly used

Other than that, the new F.E.A.R expansion, again, I didn't even realise it was coming out until I saw it in the shops, but really enjoyed it even though it has been slated. I love the F.E.A.R series though so was expecting to enjoy it and it didn't let me down

Oh yeah, forgot about Vampire Masquerade: Bloodlines, still play that on my laptop, highly underrated game, and is still so much fun to play. The voice acting for a low budget game is superb too, really adds another dimension. Suffers from bugs, but unofficial patches sort them

Naruto!!

I love it, Rise of the Ninja. Light hearted, and especially fun if you are a fan of the Anime Show.

Other than that, I've pretty much gone with the band wagons.

Will have to have a look at some of the more obscure games.

Shadow of the Colossus is the only one i've kept from my ps2 collection other than a few big names :)

Also, beat mania for ps1, that thing was class :D

Resident Evil 2

My favourite ever, when it was released on the PS1 it raised the bar a few notches. Whilst i still play through the resident evil series i find myself coming back to part 2 more than any of the others

Dannyjo did you try them yet? :D

Totally agree! Resident Evil 2 was quality, i got it as part of a PS1 one bundle back in the day! Was seriously about 10 or 11 i think and i reckon i would have turned out a different person if i wasnt subjected to such horror at such an early age. Played it again quite recently and even in comparison to todays standards its still such an excellent game! Still scares the **** out of me aswell!

Do any of you guys know what resident evil 2 is like on the gamecube? I know it didnt get any sort of overhaul like Resident Evil 1, But did they do anything atall to it?

They smoothed the jaggies a little, that's pretty much it. It's the best Resident Evil in the series by far for sure. It had 10 times the amount of zombies and scale of the first game - it's jarring when you compare the way the first two games began, RE1 was very slow to start, while the second game throws you in the middle of an exploding truck and zombies surrounding you. Amazing game.

Definitely my favourite too. For me it goes Resident evil 2 then resident evil 4, and then the others.

It was a shame when they didn't give it a big make over. :(

It really does deserve a makeover more than the first game did. If it was in the same gameplay vein as RE4 and RE5 (over the shoulder camera for aim) I wouldn't be surprised if it got even more critical acclaim than RE4 did.
