Hi

With the Computex announcements etc. underway is it worth pulling the trigger on a 7700k now or waiting?

I am looking at a 7700k and Asus Hero board, with £120 cashback it's around £385 for both. I would be getting a 360mm AIO so aiming for high 4.x or even 5ghz although wouldn't be de-lid so not sure if that would be achievable.

I am gaming with a 1080 on a 3440x1440 60hz screen. Part of me thinks the £380 would be better spent on a 1080ti upgrade, but x58 is really showing its age now and I want to pull the trigger on a complete new build. Slightly worried about going from 6 core back to 4 but hoping the IPC will make up for it in games and stabilise the minimums.

Realistically could expect a decent couple of years out of this or will I regret losing the cores? Anything better around the corner?

I spent most of my time on the computer browsing and doing spreadsheets etc. but aside from those easy tasks it's probably 80% gaming, 10% lightroom, 10% handbrake x264 encodes. I don't mind leaving the encoding overnight though and is pretty light :)

HELP!

Yeah, I'd personally stick with what you have for a while longer.

Either wait for the Coffeelake 6 core CPU, or the reiteration of Zen in 2018.

You could also just buy a Ryzen 8 core now? Up to you.

I really wouldn't go with a quad core today, now that more cores are becoming prevalent.

I would've thought your gaming minimums would be better on your current Xeon than on a 7700k to be honest, although this is pure guesswork.

Hi

Thanks both. Spent pretty much the last two days wondering what to do on this. Finally made a decision.

I have gone with the Ryzen 1700, gigabyte gaming 5 (x370) and some B-Die RAM. Logic -

1. 4 core just isn't going to last and going from 6 core down to 4 core just feels like a poor move
2. Z170/270 appear not to be compatible with coffeelake moving forward so the board would have to go
3. X370 appears to be maturing nicely, have seen a number of people on the memory forum seeing success with 3200 and 3466 RAM on the latest BIOS which was helping bridge the 7700K gap
4. Whilst my x58 system isn't bad it'll be good to see the fringe benefits e.g. I'm still largely stuck on USB2 and SATA2!
5. I can re-use the x58 as an upscaler for my projector so can get some immediate use from moving now :)

So... fingers crossed it turns out to be a good move and hopefully I can upgrade the CPU when the next iteration of Ryzen comes around without having to throw the board out!

I also got a Thermaltake Water 3.0 Riing 360mm AIO. For anyone interested it does not ship with AM4 bracket and their website is useless ($60 to ship one to the UK!) but the Corsair series are made by Asetek so it appears their mounts will work. I should have one in the next few days and will report back.

Actually the Wraith coming with the 1700 is good enough for overclocking, if you keep the voltage low and use p-states. :)

See this also, and the guy is in Australia with 28C ambient temp!

Yeah I'll be using it whilst awaiting my AIO bracket. Eventually I want a silent build so hoping the AIO will achieve that whilst maxing the CPUs potential out!
