just read an interesting article here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6943835.stm

Now while this is nothing new id be interested to see if anyone else has experienced stuff like this?

Personally I know that i suffer from the tony hawkitis where i see lines everywhere but worst of all is while listening to music i imagine how it would be done in guitar hero and tap it out with my fingers

I have vivid dreams after playing for too long, swaying around in bed after playing Unreal Tournament and making shooting noises, arm movements and even ducking after playing Gears Of War...

I'm the same! although i'm also like this with some movies that i have watched....

for a few mins after playing crackdown intensively when it was released, i was sitting on a bus and was wondering whether id be able to jump to the roof of the building. ha.

When im in a big line of slow moving traffic when i cant over take, i always wish i had the car from Spy Hunter and blast some out the way (i know your not supposed to do that in the game or real life), I always thought it was normal ha ha :D

Back when i was about 13-14yrs old and it was the summer of '96 and the peak of goldeneye, me and a mate used to go swimming once a week and pretend to shoot each other off the diving boards... ah the good old days! :D

shame i cant remember any of the guns from Goldeneye.

Other than that, same mate, used to make zelda noises and would attack myself or other using the "Hiyaaaaaaah" noise etc. Was funny :p

Can you not even remember the silenced pistol sound? Or the Ak 47 rat-tat-tat-tat lol

I remember the sound of the klobs because i always used to hate them!

After playing crackdown I used to look at buildings and notice the ledges I could grab onto.

I get so immersed in games that it's hard not to think about them in reality.

Crackdown is a perfect example. Whenever I see a building now I look for window sills and ledges to jump up onto. Seeing them mentally pleases me.

Games attempt to emulate reality in the name of play, so it's only natural that people emulate games in reality in the name of play aswell. Of course children are the worst for it, as they can suspend their disbelief extremely well.

I remember when i used to play C&C on the N64. When ever i wanted to say pic up the tv remote, i would picture a white box going over the remote so i could drag it over to me. No language!, i thought i was going crazy.

Tony Hawk's is a good example. Me and a mate always used to joke about how we'd use the surrounding environment to gain maximum points.
Can't think of any other games at the moment....but targeting systems are another good example. Like when the cross hair zooms in on someones head and you pull the trigger...if you keep seeing that over and over in the game, when you go outside you sometimes start seeing that

Anyone ever tried playing an fps in reality? I suppose paintball/laserquest basically is the same thing. But we used to play it in a warehouse near my home with co2 pellet guns (wearing eye protectors kids!!) and shorts and T-shirts. No way could you conceal a hit. And we would stack crates and move in and out of rooms etc, i even used to jump up and down while shooting lol it really does work! Thing is tho, we werent EMULATING videogames per sey, we were emulating the subject matter on which the videogame was based (deathmatch) none of us had any misconceptions that videogames were real or anything like that, simple allvsall armed combat is just great fun (as long as its treated with some caution.

Its like all these discussions, people can treat videogames with any level of emotion from complete avoidance to total immersion. But the confusion of the digital medium with the reality surrounding it is a psychological problem inherent in the individual BEFORE the games come along. Just as nutters emulate past serial killers, or reinact violent fiction. The disfunction is there to begin with all the medium does is help implant ideas, but dont fool yourselves into thinking that if everyone lived in fluffy happy land then these psychos wouldnt figure out something for themselves. Besides the real world is full of more pain, violence and anguish than any game, film or rap song.

good post, is it wrong that the last sentence half made me think 'lol emo!' and the other half 'wow thats really profound'

Oh and in more direct answer to the OPQ, yes plenty often i see something from a game in reality, but this is only because the brain recognises patterns of behaviour and can help you continue those even without some of the triggers. Its like the formula 1 race car driver, ill bet any money when he's having a bit of a drive in the country, regaurdless of his speed his brain will be subconciously calculating the cornering physics. Or the master martial artist, always alert to threats and aware of all possible escape routes even whilst having a laugh and a pint with some mates.

Whatever you do on a regular basis will be subconciously embedded in your psyche. The difference here being that say in a game, the trained response is to hit (insert button) NOT sniper some guys head from 400yards. Pretty much makes videogamers fairly harmless.

lol emo? i was more referring to just the usual war, aids, child rape etc. Im a punk rock child and violent music is great, and i loathe emo.....and ill kill you with my x button combo if you insinuate such things again.

After a good gaming session on GTA this morning I was driving to work when unfortunately my car broke down. Not wanting to be late for an important meeting I flagged down a passing car, punched the driver in the face and threw her from the vehicle which I then took and proceeded to work. Just my luck that a passing police car saw the whole thing and promptly gave chase, but not to worry as there was a car spray shop nearby and the quick change of colour threw the fuzz off my tail ;)

I don't think that I carry over any of my gaming into reality though! - although I did find myself playing a lot of Pro-Evo during the last world cup and sometimes I would sit the the PS controller in my hands during games and pretend I was playing it on a future console when the graphics will be that realistic :D
