hey guys just been looking at getting a new monitor, am currently on a 22inch Targa budget monitor thats displaying 1650x1080.

anyway was looking at a 27inch capable 1920x1080 but like the idea of the 1920x1200. have this in mind.

Hanns.G HZ281HPB 27.5.

anyone any recommendations of gaming at 1920x1200 over 1920x1080?

i do a lot of sims, black shark, flaming cliffs, also a lot of strategys. sup commander and total wars. aswell as FPS MW2 and the like.

is contrast ratio a big issue with this monitor?

I prefer gaming at 1920 x 1200, gives you more pixels although watching films you will get the black bars which I personally don't mind.

ya was thinking it would be stretched a bit being as 24 inch monitors are capable of doing this also. anyone out there with this the hanns.g 27inch?

For me, 16:9 ratio is the way forward as i was using 16:10 in the past and if i switch to 16:10 from 16:9, it just looks too stretched for me, so i'm sticking with 16:9 all the way.

I bought the Hanns G 27" a few months ago after reading a lot of positive comments in this forum (on the thread mentioned previously).

I use it a lot for games: Bad Company 2, Supreme Commander 2, Arma II, Star Trek Online, Lord of the Rings Online. They all look superb! I have never noticed any ghosting. The colours look good (after some tweaking). Overall I am very pleased with it.

My only negative observation was when I hooked it up to my PS3. It insists on stretching the display instead of showing black bars at the top and bottom. I tried going from the PS3 to the HDMI and the DVI in the Hanns G. It made no difference. Changing the "Aspect" setting in the Hanns G menu had no effect whatsoever. Shame really.
Other than that, it's a very good monitor for the money. Unfortunately though, you don't have many monitors to choose from if you want 1920 x 1200.

1920x1200 or 1920x1080 tbh its a negligible difference, you wont really notice it.

It more of a question do you want black bars while watching some HD content or not.

I bought the iiyama 27 1080 and it does seem a bit wide coming from a 16:9 The extra width seems more peripheral than practical for gaming, so I would go for the 1200 if the same price.
That said, I can't fault the monitor, its.superb.

That said, 27" is big either way, so if you game at a desk rather than from the sofa, I would go with quality/aesthetics rather than aspect ratio. The 1080 screens look more modern, but I feel 1200 is more practical.

I would definatly say 1080 is better suited to video, and 1200 better suited to games/ apps. Nut again, at this size, it is negligible, and I'm not really used to the wider aspect yet, and it is.growing on me...

mattyfez, I'm considering a 26" 1920x1200 for those reasons. I'm currently on 1280x1024 so I'm not used to widescreens and video will be of secondary concern. The Iiyama at around £245 look pretty good, still undecided on the Hanns G....

thanks for the posts guys, and i think that the extra pixels in the vertical will make a difference in a lot of games.

ime gonna be running this on the xfx 5870 but am looking to prob get the 5970 for extra FPS and being able to max out a lot of stuff at these settings

they are the same width man.

*facepalm*

the vertical FOV stays the same on games and the horizontal FOV changes depending on aspect ratio, so 1200 vertical with a 16:10 ratio will be ~1920 wide and therefore an X degrees FOV and 1080 vertical with 16:9 ratio will have an >X FOV

Or, just display the same 16:9 resolution on the 16:10 screen at 1:1 (accepting black border) and get exactly the same FOV whilst also being able to take advantage of extra vertical space for other games/applications.

A 16:10 with 1:1 mapping can do anything a 16:9 screen can do and more.

Even without 1:1, a slight vertical stretch using the same 16:9 resolution would give you the same fov.

Or, just bring the view out slightly to get the same fov at 16:10 as at 16:9 and gain extra vertical fov... :)

it's a different experience though

16:9 on a 16:10 screen looks stretched or has the black lines and it doesn't take up more of your field of view which is more of the point than having a larger in game FOV but same aspect ratio
