OK may sound like a dumb question but I dont have any first hand experience.
Comparing say 1920 x 1200 with say 2560 x 1600.
Apart from requiring a lot more hardware and providing much bigger bragging rights would the overall effect of the higher res be massively different from the lower res.

I would say "Yes" having a bigger resolution (more pixels) would create a better picture quality would it not?
Contrast ratio also is important, it measures the difference between the brightness in the bright portions of a screen and the dark portions, which overall makes for better colour quality.

Depends entirely on the physical size of the screen, the bigger the screen the higher the resoloution you want.

The two you mentioned, say if they were both on a 22" screen, I doubt you could tell the difference, apart from the smoke comming from the graphics card!!

I game at 1920x1200 on a 24" :- have had a go on a 30, it does look a bit better, but as i sit pretty near to the screen, a 30 would be way too close.

For 2560x1600 your looking at 30" monitors. 1920x1200 gives more choice (24,26,27).

I have just put my 30" 2560x1600 in 1920x1200 centred pixel mode & there is a 3" black boarder on the sides & about 2.5" on the top & bottom.
Allot of real estate has been lost.

The 30" has a higher pixel density per inch than most smaller screens so your estate will be bigger in real terms at 1920x1200 on a 27" than how 1920x1200 is on my screen.

30" does take getting used to but you do get used to it.

30" seemed massive to me when i first got it, now it doesnt feel too close or anything. I am feeling like i want more space now though, since i want to have everything open becuase i have so much space :(

My mate has a 28" 1920 monitor, and while with AA its pretty hard to tell the difference, mind you i havent had them side by side as i dont live with him anymore, I MUCH prefer the tiny pixels on my screen, instead of the large ones on his. I even have a dead pixel on my screen, well, stuck pixel. You can't notice it unless its displaying a stationary black image, and it took everyone else about 5 minutes to find it, because its so freaking small lol.
