Hi my system is :

Abit Nf7-S MB
XP-M 2600 @ 2.2
OCZ 512MB (2x256MB) PC3200 Platinum Series @ CAS2
HIS Radeon 9800 pro

I'm going to do a major upgrade at the end of the year but would adding a stick of 1GB memory give me a performance boost. I was going to get the cheapest 1 GB stick at CAS3 to add to my 512kb CAS2 memory.

e.g. Crucial 1GB DDR PC3200 CAS3 for about £70.

Good or bad idea?

cheers

Why not buy some really good ram, like 2gig of gskill ZX or some OCZ, ready for your big upgrade?

Spending £70 on RAM you ain't gonna use for long seems to be a waste

But upgrading to 1gb+ of ram will give you an boost in newer games (eg BF2) - i went from 512 to 1gig and then to 2gig and noticed a performance boost both times ;)

If you drop slow 1gb stick in there, you'll not only lose Dual Channel, but you'll force your lovely OCZ rev2 to run at the slower speed of the cheap stick.

wholeheartly agree with UZI - you're best off making the jump to 2gb (something like the 2gb G.Skill 3200 ZX seem very popular at the moment), or if you're really on a tight budget, see if you can pick up a decent set of 1gb DC ram (like the 2*512mb incarnation of the OCZ you have at the moment). My 1gb OCZ Rev2 platinum are running at 233mhz, 2.5,3,3,7 - no way i'd let a cheap stick of ram ruin that!

I agree, but if I was in your shoes, I would sell the 512mb stick and get a dual channel pair of cheap crucials 1 gig, (or 2 if you can afford it), because at the end of this year, ddr ram will probably be obsolete and you would need to purchace some ddr2 ram to go with your big update (presuming your big update is to an intel conroe or the new socket AMD's).
