Good morning all,

Been way to long since I have looked at pc hardware and as some would say im way out of touch with all the nice stuff that is on offer from OCUK. I use to build pc's/servers etc as a living back in my youth so I feel comfortable enough to build this myself to save a few ££££.

So what I think I need is a Mobo, Processor ( intel ), memory, graphics card, SSD drive ( boot drive ) and perhaps a new PSU ( Currently have a corsair 650w but not sure has all the connections for the latest Graphic cards ). Also quite a big fan of the Asus brand.

This pc will be mainly used for gaming.

Any suggestions/combinations very welcome.

Thanks

Steve.

Knew there was something I had forgotten to say! Have got Keyboard, mouse etc. PSU must be about 4 years + ( complete guess )

Taken from an old thread I started and updated to current state.

Mobo - Asus P53E
Graphics Card - Asus 460 1gb GTX
Memory - 4gb DDR3 1333
CPU - Quad Q9450 2.6ghz - not overclocked
PSU - 650 watt Corsair
HDD - Got 3 hdd's 2 sata's ( 500gb & 120gb ) and one old ide drive...
Operating system - Windows 7
Samsung 2232Bw 22'' Monitor ( highest res is 1680 x 1050 )

There's a bit of room in the budget for a PSU. 650w will be fine even if it is 4 years old, as long as it is a quality PSU (which is why I asked which model it is).

You could do with a new monitor to give that 290 some work to do ;)

There's an MSI 770 Gaming on Today Only offer that would bring the price down to the lower end of your budget.

Cheers for that Flux, any particular reason for the Gigabyte board? Is the MSI gaming series boards any good?

Forgot to mention I already have a case - ThermalTake Tsunami Series Aluminum ATX Mid-Tower Case. Presume standard sort of sized pc cases can take the latest graphics cards, I know the cards seem to be getting bigger.

Eeeekkk a new monitor would make sense I guess considering if I want full potential out of a graphics card.

Thanks

Steve.

That's an interesting case. I've had a look on the manufacturer's website and the cooler I selected above will fit, as will the GPU if you remove the hard drive cage.

(Assuming this is your case: http://support.thermaltakeusa.com/Product.aspx?C=1433&ID=1887#Tab5 )

The Gigabyte Sniper is very good value, and it has excellent onboard audio. The MSI Gaming boards are fine, but I own the mATX version of the Sniper, so maybe I'm biased ;)

The msi gaming series have good onboard sound as well. But the gigabyte or MSI are both good boards.

If your colour matching and get a msi gaming edition GPU then you could opt for the msi gaming for the "look".

That does indeed look like my case, so new case will be needed.

Only ever done the Nvidia cards so perhaps it is time to try a AMD chip for a change...

Quite enjoying the thought of building a pc up again, it has been to long.

Cheers

Steve.

Made a few changes here and there, obviously downgraded the graphics card slightly but will probably have to add a monitor to the budget now. Thoughts and opinions please on a post card :)

Is this particular brand of memory any good?

Looks fine, but the GPU is no longer on offer, unfortunately. Prices being equal, I'd go for a 280X over a 770.

The This Week Only deals will change later today, so wait to see what they bring.

I was just about to post that GPU :D Great price.

I've put some cheaper RAM in and a cheaper case. And a monitor.

1080p or 1440p for the resolution. A higher refresh rate (120hz or 144hz rather than the 60hz standard) will give you a smoother experience, particularly in fast-paced games like first-person shooters. 1080p 120/144hz makes sense for gaming at the moment. You could keep the whole thing in budget with a 1080p 60hz monitor.

Looking good and makes sense with the SSD drive. The memory has a lower speed, presume nothing noticable compared to the other stuff originally posted? I have always been a person that likes to do it nice and not to have to do it twice!

Sorry for all the questions, everything has changed sooooooo much since I last looked at pc hardware. So many choices of items, sort of gets a little confusing.

The RAM has lower speed, but also tighter timings and lower voltage, and it's £20 cheaper. I've got no idea if 1600mhz C9 is better or worse than 2133mhz C11 for gaming, but I do know whatever performance difference there is, it is negligible. I use that Avexir RAM myself (or the white LED version, anyway).

I initially looked on Ocuk just to buy a new headset and I dont even have that in my shopping trolley :D

I know the feeling. I came here looking for a cheapish laptop for university - 6 months later I've built the PC in my sig and I'm on 2,600 posts :p
