Looking for a gaming grade card for a Htpc

Need
3d playback via powerdvd over hdmi
3d playback is with a Panasonic plasma gt30
Needs to be silent at idle, or capable of being silent with custom fan profile
Does not need to be silent at load.. Ie silent for films, not so bothered about games
Don't want it too long.. Might not fit in case
Power/heat.. The case has no doubt bad air flow. So needs to be effective at removing heat out the back

Price of 100 ish used

Looking at 6870 or 560ti but haven't a clue on variant.
3d and noise is a must

Don't know how nvidia work with 3d, I know amd work with my TV

I have to go used, the 100 3d capable cards are not up to gaming at 1080 res

Is it better to go amd than nvidia if not using nvidia 3d vision?

Which 3D software do you use?

Tridef is (IMO) the second best 3D software and it doesn't work properly with SLI bu works with x fire. Other than that, it doesn't really matter which side you go for; they perform identically. AMD usually are better at lower/mid range cards so your best bet is often to go with AMD in cases like this.

I only tried a couple, haven't bought any yet.

Power dvd worked with my 6950

Gpu> av receiver > tv

Is the route

Sound over hdmi obviously

If you can find a cheap 6950/560ti blower that would be ideal, if not then lower cards is your option.

There are a few titles that natively support 3D on AMD- Deus Ex HR, Dirt, BF3, Sniper Elite V2 and more to come.

Tridef works fantastic with AMD, I was misinformed by some users here that it was **** even though they hadn't even tried it(you know the kind:p).

There may be nigles here and there, but it's vice versa with Nvidia3D as they have their nigles too.

Tridef's not as good with Nvidia, as Tridef techs won't give you any help at all(due to the fact that Nvidia's publicly been quite scathing to them and it's backed by AMD).

It's not doom and gloom if you were to get a green gpu as the Tridef forum has Nvidia users that will help you to get some games working if you are having trouble.

Don't forget Tridef costs $50/£30 so you will need to add that into your budget too.

Ultimately though from what I said above, imho, your best bet would be to stick to AMD as it will give you the best result for your setup.

II would prefer amd all things being equal as I have had them since I built my pc

If it's amd I expect I will have to go with a 6870 as the 6950 is a bit expensive and probably too power hungry

How do these things,, tri def etc work? And how do they compare to say my tvs 3d conversion? It is pretty good on f1 game

Tridef>TV conversion

(this is going by my Samsn monitor's 3D conversion vs tridef's)

I don't think I'd get one for near 100 tho, even the 1gb would probably be OK at 1080?

Gonna have to check my case, think that is nearly too long!

Have thought of another issue, think I will need rear exhaust. Case is really cramped, does that limit me to reference and rule out the 560 ti?

Found this

Massive length difference, wanted the amd really
