Gaming card which will run cooler

I live in a location with high humidity and dust. Currently taking steps to cool my current pc. (so using normal production software I can keep the CPU below 60'c (i5 with 16gb of ram so no page swapping)

It did have a Radeon R265 originally but last year due to over heating I stopped playing games etc and removed the card.

Looking to start with gaming again and although I wont be running a lot of FPS games, from experience titles like the CIV range can cause a GFX to work over time.

Sort of thinking of something like a R580, but have read that AMD cards run hotter. If this is the case would it be better to go Nvidia and if so which models should I be looking at?

Ideally didn't want to spend a fortune on a card (maybe up to a max of £200).

If you're playing at 1080p, a RX570 would be a decent call for you. AMD Vega cards ran warm but the Polaris are fine. The 570 sips power and so will keep cooler.

Sapphire brand for a RX580 will be around the £200 budget, or less, Sapphire have some of the best cooling too.

Also consider the 5500 cards too


For Nvidia, the basic 1660 is above your £200 budget. Better versions of the 1660 are even more out of your price range £250-£300. You'll be looking a dual fan card so will be north of £240+ for Nvidia

Good call. Just looked on a couple of spec pages and couldn't see much between them, but hen watched a youtube video which puts it in simpler terms, 5 to 10 degrees cooler with no noticeable difference on screen.

Make sure you check reviews for specific brands of cards as cooler performance varies a lot.

For example I have a zotac 1070 and lots of people say they run warm but as mines the amp extreme version with better cooler on it it runs at about 50c max all the time

Seen a 3 fan 570 on here which looks like it could be very good, but just happy that 570 looks like the best choice. Just need to see how the extra cooling goes first, and then can look at this.

I run one or two 580 cards for mining which are basically the same as the 570...they respond very well to undervolting which has a big effect on temps of course

One of them has had both fans die (after running 24hrs a day for 2 years)...i removed fan blades and put two 80mm fan in their place and its now about 10c cooler than the rest of the cards...looks ugly but works

Have you considered fitting an aftermarket cooler if required?

Accelero coolers are very good....got one on an olde 280x that hit 80c all the time mining...runs at 45c now when flat out (its retired though)

I'm strapping an extra Corsair fan to the case to extract warm air, just waiting for a cable converter to arrive.

What case do you have and how are the fans set up inside it? The case and airflow through it has a huge effect on component temps.

The original case is one from ChillBlast and upon investigation is a CIT Domination (quite old now). So currently two going in the front and two going out of the back (one being the ps) with two going in on the side. (There is also a bottom intake I think..)

Issue with the case is that on the top there is just a grate, which normally would be good, but lets so much dust in..

So did a massive clean (as much as I was able to) and basically taped over anything that is a hole and doesn't have a fan attached. (The fans all have some filtering over them.)

The new fan, as it going on the top, just going to use it to drag air upwards (warm air rises..).

I think the £25 I have spend on fan and cable is probably as much as I want to throw on the case and if its still problematic, will look to get the fractal design 7. But what I have done (just waiting for the cable to fit the fan) has already taken about 7 degrees off of idle and about 15 degrees off the top end, so happy. This equates to playing runescape or world of warplanes without it going over 70c (Which is was doing before the clean just running my web dev setup.)
