Gaming Headphones - Recomendations?

Firstly, I wasn't sure if this should be in Sound City or here in PC Games, so I'll leave it to the Dons to decide :).

I'm after a decent-ish set of gaming headphones so that I can game after everyone has gone to bed. I don't really have a budget in mind, though I will say I'm not looking for anything at the top of the price range ;).

The other thing I wasn't sure of is, do I want normal 3.5mm jacks, or are the USB headphones a viable alternative? Some places seem to suggest they are good, others that it's a step backwards because audio decoding ends up being done in software rather than via the dedicated soundcard hardware?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

My sennheiser PC165's came with 3.5 jacks and with a USB adaptor. Sennheiser are usually regarded as the best make for headsets. The razer headset likes nice aswell though

Memphis, when you say you want to game when everyone else is in bed, does this preclude open headsets from your search?

I was thinking the same thing?

I had some sennheiser 550 (think that was the model) fantastic headphones but open so people in the room had to listen to the same thing as me lol

Got some Audio Technicas AD300 and they are open but they will not be anywhere near loud enough for people to hear you through walls. Found with open headphones that they have better sound positioning while closed have more bass. Not sure about usb or 3.5mm

missus got me some Creative Fatality headphones for xmas. really wanted 5.1 but these seem quite capable and not too expensive!

Well, if they lowered the ambient volume over normal speakers, then they might be a viable option :).

Thanks for all the opinions so far guys.

For what it's worth, I use Sennheiser HD555s - sound is good, positioning is spot on, and while open, they're not hugely audible to others.

Another huge benefit is that they are incredibly comfy - I find I can wear them for hours on end.

555's that's them, great headset!

Only downside is no mic but they cover your ear totally (well did mine) the most comfortable headset I've ever had tbh...

Don't buy headsets with mics, anything usb, anything "surround sound" , or any creative crapola.

In a way I'm glad to hear you say that. I've been looking to get a closed ear set with a mic although I've already got a perfectly good set of Beyer Dynamic DT100's and am a bit loathed to spend a lot just to have one with a mic.

I don't suppose there's any clip on mics that you use that you could recommend as an alternative to the built in ones?

Thanks.

Elara clip on mic works a treat and costs next to nothing!

lol well not exactly gaming headphones if they dont have a mic, i think the only thing that defines a gaming headset as gaming would be... the microphone.

Hmmm, maybe I was being too specific then... but my post is titled "Gaming Headphones, not headset ;):D.

I was never looking for a set with a mic, as it's not for online gaming that I want them (would be a little redundant having a mic for late night gaming given they would be hearing me talking!).

Thanks again guys.
