Gaming Headset advice....

Hello,

After a headset currently using HD681's plus a 6 quid mod mic, wanting to upgrade to an all in one as the clips all broken and using pegs on my shirt and i'm sure it sounds pants, thought about getting a proper modmic for these headphones but they are literally the price of headsets and I dont want two wires really.

So after something with an easily accessable mute option, equivalent or better sound than my current headphones and what about surround? im confused, I basically want the optimum setup for FPS, locating sounds etc. Do I need surround sound, looking at the Logitech Gaming Pro X but it says for surround I need external soundcard and to use USB instead of 3.5mm? is surround essential for locating foot steps accurately? will they be much better than windows sonic, also I want to keep software to a minimum. Any recommendations, wired only.

£100 budget or less, not that anal about sound as half deaf with tinitus anyway but want it as good as current headphones.

Superlux gives some darn good sound per price, so hard to see that price gaming products being as good.
Some Kingston HyperX might be best bet.

What little recordings I've found sound precisely like standard dumb downmixing.
And apparently Windows Sonic for Headphones has never really worked on PC.
(not that Xbox recordings have sounded exactly good either)

Ah, maybe a better standalone mic then, everywhere recommends these antilion modmic 5.0 that can be attached but looks discontinued with no replacement model, hardly any choice unless you want a desk mic. Any alternatives to windows sonic that work?

Antlion have Uni, USB and wireless Modmic's on their site. Uni looks to be the v5 replacement, but I could only see USB and wireless version on a popular website.

All Modmic's attach to the headphone, but unless the Uni is available, that leaves the USB one being the cheapest model at £80. A lot to spend on a microphone.

The only other decent alternative is the V-Moda boom Pro, but that cannot be used with headphones that have a fixed cable, as it works as a single headphone and microphone combined cable replacement.

If you don't want to have two cables, that leaves the wireless Modmic at £110.

Maybe a headset would be the best option. HyperX Cloud Alpha, would probably be the best choice for under £100.

For surround sound, you'd need either a sound card, Creative's SBX software or Dolby Atmos for Headphones in Windows 10.

Atmos software has a trial in W10 IIRC, then you pay for it if you want to continue using it. Can't remember what it costs.

Creative's SBX software costs £30 from their site. Not cheap, given you can get SBX on a Creative Audigy FX sound card, which is around £35.

Razer did have some free software, which is better than nothing but not as good as the above.

I was in the same boat a few days ago. I have been using the AKG702 with a modmic which unfortunately has now stopped working. I purchased a Zalman ZMMIC1 clip on Mic which was ok but I got fed up of keep clipping it on, then forgetting to take it off when I left my desk to see it ping off across the room

So I purchased the Sennheiser GSP 500 open back headset for £99 and I have to say, i'm really impressed with it. People I game with said the MIC is so much better now. I am using it through a Soundblaster G6 and I can't fault it. It has a volume control on the side of the right earpiece and the MIC mutes when you raise it up which is a great touch. All reviews I have seen have been positive. The GSP 600 is also available for around £169 which is the closed back version.

I prefer open back design for greater soundstage when gaming, I find it helps pinpoint footsteps etc. For the money, I think it's great.

It is a 3.5mm connector for Headphones and Mic and also comes with a 4 pole cable to join the headphone and mic connector so it can be used on consoles I believe.

Sweet they actually look pretty decent, going to look into those, Yea I have the zalman mic, decent for 6quid but its annoying and clips all broken. Wondering why all the gaming ones are closed back when semi open is better for foot steps right?
