Anyone here play games on your linux rig via wine or other method?

i only ask as im having trouble getting BF1942 and C&C Generals to work :( and the wine guides are not that helpfull.

I tried. Couldn't even get steam games to work. I gave up quite quickly.

Might want to stick this in the linux forum. They will be far more knowledgable.

Take a look at Cedega, its specifically for games, works a little better than Wine, but generally i find gaming under linux a bit of a joke, and your much better off dual booting.

Gaming under emulation is nasty. You can always try games that have Linux versions available. UT, Doom, and a few other series are able to run natively under Linux. Any D3D game should be played on Windows though.

Why bother wasting your time?

I'd sooner spend however much on a license for Windows than mess about trying to get it to work in Linux. As soon as an update comes out for say Steam, it's broke again.

1. i have a win xp pro retail license but i prefer to use a linux system and as i only game occasionally wine seamed like a good idea s then i would not need a bulky windows install cluttering my hard drive.

2. Steam works fine and has done since the say i installed it with no update problems.

I have installed UT, Savage, Enemy Territory, and Steam via Wine, was just hoping that i could have bf1942 and c&c generals as i know that they will work vie wine its just a bugger getting them going.

It's pretty cheap. Something lik 2 quid a month. Thing that puts me off though is that they use a lot of the wine technology, but prevent their programmers from contributing to wine, even in their spare time.

Wine Is Not an Emulator :p

Am I right in thinking DirectX only games don't work on Wine and Cedega? Or do they include an unofficial implementation of the DX api as well?

C&C3 works very well under wine (it's the top voted game under wine atm). The reason it's not working for the OP is that his graphics card doesn't meet the game requirements.

So don't be put off because of this guy's experience, it's not a Wine issue.

edit:

From his other thread:

card does not support pixel shader but that was never a problem with Windows XP as i have had the same ( all be it crappy) gfx card for a couple of years. (Geforce 4 mx440 64mb).

The Geforce 4 mx isn't supported according to the C&C3 system requirements. This also matches up with the log wine generated for him.

Used Cedega for a while but i *** hardly get my graphics card to be recognised in games for some reason so i was playing stuff like CS1.6 on 3fps when in windows it was 60 or w/e cant remember

Probably not using your cards proprietary drivers.
