Ive got a Amd Athlo 3500+ 64 (Venice, socket 939), 1GB PC3200, Gigabyte nforce4 motherboard and an XFX nvidia 7800GT 256MB (PCI-E). The PSU is 430W. I'm also running 2 HDD. Im using on-board sound card

Whenevr I play any of my games (Fear, Half Life 2, Oblivion etc) the PC firstly flickers some textures and then proceeds to just crash. it stops whatever its doing and loops the sound until i am forced to reboot.

This happens any games I play and its beginning to annoy me. Ive re-seated all my hardware with no success. Ive rolled back my gfx to different drivers and tried the new ones aswell. But still didnt work.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Check your drivers and do not over clock. You can check for artifacts in ATI tool, to see the integrity of your core.
You could look between the beta driver of nvidia, really for me the current doesn't work at all.In Doom 3, the rendering is wrong and I got a message from the game console about bad rendering, driver null object and it crashed.
Also in Need for Speed Most wanted, the sky was messed up.
I went back to 91.33 and no problem at all.

thanks for the input guys. As i said ive tried rolling back drivers and it didnt solve anything.

As far as the card over heating, ive got both side panels off from the case and the card heatsink works fine. ive run tests and the card isnt overheating.

Not sure if the problem is stemming because of the on-board sound (i imagine this wouldnt cause the problem at all) or whether the actual card is faulty.

any clues?

i had a problem exactly like this, my shuttle was totally stable in windows, but start a game and it crashed at random within the first 30mins, it turned out the onboard sound was dying, disabling it in bios and sticking in a dedicated sound card made all the problems disappear, maybe it will be the same for you
