Gaming keyboards.... Any good..?

Hi matey what did you not like about it? What is the main purpose of the G keys on these boards? can you programme any combo into them like for example i am playing stalker at the mo and "to crouch" you have to press ctrl & shift would i be able to programme the G key to do this?

The G15 got great reviews and its got 4.5 stars on oc. I have the G11 and its great for any type of game. I havent used the macro keys much thb but i would presume you can. comes with software for this

IIRC you bind keyboard macros to the G keys so yes, you should be able to bind, say, G1 to make you crouch in stalker. (ctrl and shift to crouch? dont remember that. Surely that should just be ctrl or C alone..).

Honestly what I didnt like was responsiveness and placement of the keys. Felt very fiddly to get to the different keys, and pressing them didnt 'feel' comfortable. In a game like WoW where you could easily have binds to more keys than a normal keyboard provides, then the programmable G keys become useful, hence the popularity I suppose.

My opinion is totally subjective of course :), but imho if you're playing games where you need to hit different keys accurately and reliably then the G15 isnt the way to go.

Yea this is fair enough, does seem to be a popular keyboard. My 2 cents would be that it didnt agree with me, but it's certainly a functional keyboard with plenty of interesting features on it. :)

I would suggest that you find someone you know who has it or visit somewhere that stocks it and try to have a play with it, see what you actually think of the feel. After all, ultimately it's you who has to use it :)

i think pc world stock these for an insane price of course :D so might pop down there soon and see if they have any out like you say just to get a feel for it. To be honest my apple keyboard works great with windows 7 and feels great to :)

yeah agree with Alex on the G15... I've got one at home, and i used one last week with him, and it really was Terrible to play SCII on... however when i used to play WoW.. i swore by it! .. as said, it is very subjective!

whats a good cheaper alternate to the G15 i just cant justify spending £60 on a keyboard lol it does seem to get very mixed reviews

Well tomorrow I'll have a MS sidewinder X4 on my desktop and that was under £30 so I'll let you know, its meant to be decent enough..

Even has red blacklit keys although I'd have prefered blue but anyhow good enough for me provided I no longer get the woeful lag from wireless..

I couldn't justify £80 for the one I asked about in the end.. Seemed a bit too much IMO.

£80 indeed is a bit steep for a keyboard aint it! you could be half way to getting yourself a 6000 series card with that :).

Deffo let me know how you get on with your new keyboard matey you got a link for it here?

This looks kinda funky for £20

this one -

Although shop around, its cheaper then this at some places. Linked to OCUK so as I don't infringe any rules.

It looks ok, nothing funky and hopefully it'll do the job.

and yes, £80 is a lot but then I've seen gaming keyboards for nearly £140.. A lot of dosh for a keyboard..!!

Throwing in more G15 comments, as above I love it for WoW when combined with the G-15 add-on for it to give you easy skills, but I've had no problems with it in any other games. That said, I don't use macros for any other games, so its like any other keyboard. Wouldn't want the new G15 with the rubbish number of macros though :3

There is absolutely nothing wrong whatsoever with my wireless keyboard (MS one). My current wireless mouse is a bit crappy at losing signal, but the one before that one never did, not even once.

Why people say things like "wireless is useless" is hard for me to understand. I notice no different between my wireless keyboard and the hundreds of wired I had before it. None. Zero. Nada.

I’ve been doing a bit of research into this, and the MS wireless 5000 and 6000 keyboard in fps games have been reported as being very laggy, and my problems really started when I got a BenQ 1080p screen. Not saying this is the fault, however I read another forum post where the poster said something along the same lines and reported the same issues as me once he’d swapped his screen for another one.

It got worse when I moved the computer room around a bit, apparently few reports of interference causing problems with the wireless signal. My problem is that when I press W to move forward I have to lift off the W key and press again otherwise I pause or stop moving. Its not fluid, same with side stepping and moving backwards. Its very annoying.

I don’t remember it being quite so bad when I first got the keyboard but anyhow I’m not sure if the problem for me is that wireless keyboard for gaming is just useless or I’ve got some other problem meaning I can’t use the wireless keyboard for prolonged key strokes, which for a fps pressing the W key for prolonged periods of time is pretty much standard.

It could just be that wireless keyboard just won’t work in the current environment I’m in. I will also admit that I’ve only ever tried one wireless keyboard, the one I’m currently using, and no other models etc… Hence my sweeping statement of wireless appears to be useless. To me, wireless for all its intents and purposes doesn’t work, and is therefore useless for me.

Anyhow, its decided. Its been ditched in favour of wired.

I managed to find a USB keyboard that work kindly lent me to see what changes a USB keyboard made..

Yep, it made a heck of a difference... Mass Effect is soooo good. The graphics are amazingly good. I know the game is out on 360, do wonder how it looked on the 360 compared to PC - I whacked the details to max everything..

Anyhow, its so much better with a working keyboard, mouse failed though. Wireless mouse button stops every now and then.. No big problem, but added Logitech MX518 to the MS Sidewinder X4 keyboard. That'll fix the problems...

Right, back to playing mass effect - great game, been missing out on a real classic from the looks of it.. :p:D
