Afternoon'

My laptop is starting to get a bit old now (its an XPS15 from 4-5 years ago or so) and its about time I started looking for a replacement.

I don't really want to spend more than £1k as I don't want to replace my desktop, however I would still like to play the more recent, and upcoming games at respectable framerates etc (BF3 for example) for lans due to ease of portability.

The MSI GX660 looks alright, however i'm not sure if £1k will buy more current tech from a different brand or similar.

Advice?

Under a grand you'd be hard pressed, with that you can spec out a dell xps l702x with a 555m It's decent but nothing special, with 10% off code and promotional money off itl come to £1002 all tricked out I think.

OR Alienware M17xR3 .. or m18x

Keep your eye out on the dell outlet, some cracking alienware deals, you can get a 1080p 6970m machine for about £1093.

The 6970m I believe is desktop equivilent to 6850 560gtx

Here's mine I bagged last night

That's not a bad deal at all that would be loads more on the dell customise website.

Certified refurbished I think means fully working no marks

Scratch and dent I think means there's a lottery in which it could have a scratch or dent, though nobody on these forums have had any problems. Besides your able to call them and get a refund/replacement part free of cost.

So tempted...

do it i got mine for £1093 with a 2720qm cpu 8gb ram, 750gb hdd, you wont get a better deal man, if you dont get it someone else will :P

Wish it had 8gb ram, don't mind so much about the CPU, doubt its that big of an upgrade...

My bank balance may take a hammering, waiting may be the safest option! Lol!

you can always upgrade the ram really cheap, ive got an ssd ill put in for boot drive, ill use the 750gb as storage, id do it man i bet its a beastly machine, besides you could always sell it for 400 pound more on ebay as even if you did that youd be getting what its worth from a consumer point of view, a lot of people trade from the outlet ive heard, not for me but i bet you could make a big buck

I'm assuming the CPU difference with the same cache is going to be hardly any different, can't really tell the difference between 2.5 and 4.0 on my desktop rig :p

I got Crucial for just under £40 but I was tempted with Corsair at £35. :)

what speed and where ? im thinking of upgrading my laptop to 16gb when it comes, reason is, tracking and composing i used to max out my 6gb ram on desktop so 8gb is hardly going to be better, 16gb means i have oodles of freedom

ahh yeah im aware of that, clues are allowed, yeah ive seen 1333mhz ram but i was thinking of getting 1600mhz plus, you can get 8gb 1866mhz for 95 quid, though i think its overkill, ill see how the 1333 is when i get it, compared to the 1866 i had in my desktop

Its back on sale...

Paranoid a better deal will come up if I buy this ;p

Just set a target I say and if u find something for the price then eat it up. Always gonna be something a bit better or cheaper but if u wait u might just miss out on a great deal. I'm also looking to get one of those to replace my busted XPS15. Was thinking to get the L502x but its so chunky might aswell get a alienware for abit better. Really loved the design of the XPS15, think dell going backwards in that department.

Good luck finding something man :D
