Hello,

A friend of mine has asked me if there is any way he can get a gaming laptop for his £500 budget.

I realise this is below anything here on OCUK which is why i hope this discussion might be allowed.

I have found a few acers etc with basic graphics cards, but im a PC man usually (although im in the market for a much higher end desktop replacement right now), i just don't understand how the specs translate into performance on a laptop.

Basically he wants to be able to play most games, but isnt overly concerned with high end graphics, just the ability to play with reasonable performance.

Can anyone help me please?

Thanks for reading :)

£500 is a pretty tight budget. When you say he want's to play most games what do you mean? Will he be wanting to play things like BF4?

If I was you I would advise him to keep saving and get himself at least an £800 laptop. Look for Dedicated GTXM graphics cards instead of just the GT graphics cards as these will run games easier.

This is the cheapest laptop on the site and would suit his needs well - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=LT-146-MS&groupid=959&catid=1828

With desktop PC's you can buy a decent one for around £600 to play the latest games but it works differently with laptops and you will have to spend a lot more to get the same performance.

For £50 more you could get this - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=LT-023-GI&groupid=959&catid=1828

Which does have a better GPU.

Hope this helps. My main advice would be to save just a bit more!

What he said^

A laptop equivalent of a £500 desktop would cost like £1000+ but the obvious disadvantages of a desktop is higher power comsumtion, you need a monitor and it's less mobile etc.

A cheap gaming laptop if you are ok gaming at 720p at low setting is an AMD A10 based laptop - you can pick them up for around £350 (with 8gb and a 1Tb harddrive)

Thanks for the replies, pretty much what i expected. I was coming up empty trying to find anything remotely viable in his price range.

Yeah, if he's choosing between desktop or laptop then desktop is much more suitable on his budget. Otherwise just get him to save a bit more and he should be able to pick u something nice.
