Hey all. My current laptop is about 4 years old now and it just isn't able to keep up with the newer games anymore - namely WoW and CS:S.

I did consider a nice desktop rig but my studies don't really allow for it. I usually fly between the US, UK, Japan and Taiwan multiple times per year for extended stays, so lugging around or mailing a big desktop just isn't possible really.

The only requirements are that it can play recent games on half decent settings and has a 17 inch monitor. I'm not worried about weight or size really as I rarely bring it in to uni for anything. I'll just set it up and leave it in my room to use like a desktop.

I'm looking to spend around £1000 for a nice setup with the absolutely maximum being somewhere around £1200. I heard the Dell Vostro has gotten some nice reviews so I took a quick glance at those. How about the XPS series? Bit expensive but I might be able to stretch it.

Thanks for the advice all. I've been doing a bit of browsing around and I came across this spec - Dell's Vostro 1700.

BASE Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7500 (2.20 GHz, 4 MB L2 cache, 800 MHz FSB)
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows Vista® Ultimate (32Bit) - English
LCD 17.0" UltraSharp™ Wide Screen WUXGA (1900x1200) TFT Display with TrueLife™
MEMORY 2048MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM (2x1024)
HARD DRIVE 160GB (7200RPM) SATA Hard Drive
GRAPHICS CARD 256MB nVidia® GeForce® 8600M GT

The total comes in at £839 which is well within my budget. Should this be enough to play WoW and CS:S with maybe a few other newer games on decent settings?
