Hi all.

Yep I'm going to be one of those guys that dares to want a laptop for gaming that doesn't want to spend too much money. Please don't hate me.

Ok so firstly. I do already have an awesome gaming PC (thanks OcUK!) however it is quite noisy which means I annoy people if I use it at night. My girlfriend is studying and living abroad in America so there is quite a time difference and I am looking to get something so I can game with her at night without waking everyone up. As such the laptop will be sitting on my bedside table or even laying on my bed so I don't need something that is particularly portable or with great battery life.

When I say I want a laptop for gaming I need to be able to run Guild Wars 2 (for her) and Skyrim (for me). I don't need to be able to run them on the highest settings but want a machine that can have them running well whilst looking good.

As for my budget I am very concious of the fact that its going to be hard to justify buying a laptop for the sort of money that could pay for a trip to go visit the other half. I would love to come in at £1,000 however I could justify spending more for something that represented very good value for the extra money.

So far I am very much liking the look of the OcUK Limited Edition P170EM but would like the advice of all you clever clever people here.

Can anyone recommend a laptop that would suit my needs for less or a comparable laptop? If not what upgrades would be worth making to the P170EM based on what I want it for? Is it really worth going for the i7 over the i5, how much RAM would be sufficient without being overkill?

Oh and one last question, I know technology is always improving but is there anything huge on the horizon that means it might be worth hanging on just a little longer be that some super OcUK offers or some lovely new tech?

Sorry for my life story and thanks in advance for any help and advice :)

When you say your PC is noisy - do you mean the fans or the speakers? Either way it's a pretty easy problem to solve - either headphones, or some better quality 3rd party fans/heatsinks.

Laptop fans are often very noisy too btw since it's so hard to do effeicient cooling in such a compacted device, and the tiny fan has to run high RPM. I'd say my laptop makes comfortably more noise running the same game vs my desktop.

Sorry yeah I should have been more specific there. It's the fans rather than the speakers, these days I always just use a gaming headset.

It isn't so much that the PC is loud as much as the sound carries very far and a lot of that is down to where it is in the house which is something that isn't very practical to change. From where I would be using my laptop I suspect noise wouldn't be an issue.

If I do go for that one I think I am definitely going to go for the i7 over the i5.

Any advice on the RAM? The product page seems pretty sure the 8gb will be sufficient and that the 16gb isn't really needed and it looks like if I ever did need to upgrade then I could do so without much issue. Would you all agreed?

Alternatively if anyone can recommend an alternative laptop I am not yet set on that one, just so far it seems to be looking pretty good for what I am after but I am more than happy to keep an open mind, I have no problem admitting the fact that there are far smarter and more expert people on this forum than I so please if you have an opinion feel free to voice it.

8GB should be fine - 4GB is mostly fine to unless you like to run more than 1 copy of a game i.e. multiple characters in an MMO but no point buying 4GB these days. You'd only need 16GB if you were doing something very specific like running multiple virtual machines.

Thanks for that.

I'm looking to make a purchase before the end of the week. So far looking at getting that OcUK Limited Edition P170EM but with:
i7
8gb RAM
128gb SSD (Adata)
320gb HDD
Win 7 Home

Should work out at £1137.95

Oh and anyone got any thoughts on coolers? Coolermaster Notepal U3 Cooler looks pretty good but never had any experience what so ever so not too sure what would be best to go for.

Would be looking to be gaming for up to... 4/5 hours maybe and wanting to not generate too much noise. Any recommendations?

Ok so I ordered it along with the Coolermaster Notepal U3 Cooler. With the free shipping offer I decided to just go for it... well after a chat with the other half ;)
