Hi there.

Im looking to buy a gaming laptop but wanted to get a few opinions before making a purchase.

First of all is going to be used for gaming, ideally want a 15 inch screen so its portable and the main use will be when the mrs is using the gaming desktop and away from home so i want something as light as possible but still with enough power to play all games currently out.

Here are the options i am thinking out but please suggest any others i may have missed that are similar.

MSI GS60 2PE-060UK Ghost Pro 15.6

light and powerful but have seen many people say there are over heating problem with this machine and if you game with it on your laptop then will burn you?

GIGABYTE P25X v2-CF1 Gamer

2.8 kg but the most powerful machine by quite abit graphically, 2.8 is still quite portable?

GIGABYTE P35W v2-CF2 UltraForce Gamer 15.6

what is windows 8.1 like for gaming? hated windows 8 when it came out but maybe it has improved. can wondows 7 be put on any of these laptops if required

Like i say i want a 15 inch laptop , portable and one thats not going to have temps going over the roof, what would u recommend from the above or if you have others options then let me know.

Hi Luke8707,,,

The options you are considering all look good and the feedback "fair"

The P35 chassis is very nice portable design and is the machine I am using. The best value unit that OCUK have (and they are the only 3 left in UK) is the;

Stock Code: LT-008-GI Manufacturers Code: P35K-CF4

Advantages over the MSI GS60 are numerous, but the main one being the P35 units come with optical drive (this model actually has Blu-Ray writer) The dirve is re-moveable and can be replaced with additional SSD or HDD :-)

The bracket is supplied FOC with the laptop.

The LT-008-GI product is reduced by about £300, so really does offer excellent value for money.

Performance machines will always be warm, but we haven't experienced problems with P35 units, so no issues there.

I am also new to Win8, and after a couple of weeks use I don't find it problematic:-)

Hope that helps

This was in a review from KitGuru the other day.. :) they recommend to buy from OCUK too. It was near enough a perfect review and the reasons are clear, it is a great machine!

MSI wins the "Must Have" award at KitGuru for the GS60 2PE GHOST PRO

“The MSI GS60 2PE Ghost Pro is a powerful, well designed, super thin gaming laptop. It really doesn’t get any better than this. A perfect partner for LAN gaming events.„
- Allan Campbell, KitGuru

Highlights
• Super thin and very portable.
• Weighs less than 2kg.
• Backlit SteelSeries keyboard.
• Great screen.
• Decent onboard sound.
• Very powerful CPU and GPU.
• RAID 0 Solid State Drive configuration – hitting 1000MB/s.
• Very competitively priced.

Gigabyte P35K gives you the following as a comparison;

Extra 8GG Ram (16GB installed)

Full HD IPS screen - Screen on GS60 reviewed as "great" - but IPS is widely accepted as much better quality and clarity

Hot swappable Optical drive (with caddy bracket supplied FOC)

The extras available on this model come at a discount as graphics are GTX765m but this really does give you the end user a true bargain.

So even if the MSI is "very competitively priced"... this P35 is £260 cheaper :-)

there's no doubting the msi machine is awesome and looks better as well but even tho i expect a machine to get warm, it shouldn't get as hot as it has been reviewed / fedback to be and that worris me as its comes from all kind of different places.
however 765m is not where i want to go, im happy to spend big bucks to get the right machine and i would only look at a laptop with a gtx870 or 880,

i kind of like the p25x v2 but just worried it might be too big?

What makes a 17" any less portable you can get top grade backpacks that have a designated space for 17" laptops. i'm going for the stealth pro because it's specs have caught my eye mainly and reviews are pretty satisfactory. It's £1400 price tag is a blow but thats life unfortunately. I suggest what ever you choose make sure you get a cooling stand for it CM has pretty decent ones.

Still believe the smart money for the spec is being spec on this..LT-008-GI and there is now only 2 left. This is a genuine bargain at the price (saving £300 against original price) and £240 Vs the MSI...

i cant speak for the gigabyte, but the GS60 gets VERY warm during crysis 3! The GTX 870m is working overtime to push all those glorious pixels out, and you're looking at a chip temp of 93C. As for the actual device, it gets warm on top and very warm underneath. So you need to do any extreme gaming at the table, or with the laptop resting on the sofa arm! within a few minutes of finishing gaming, its fans stop and its lovely and cool again.

I believe that the Razer blade 14/17 and the gigabyte blades all have this "issue". When you go super thin, the heat is bound to escape through other channels! I had the same issue with my Alienware M14x with GT 555m!! It certainly hasnt spoiled my fun with my GS60 ghost pro! And i'm sure you'd be happy with whatever model you choose!
