Gaming Laptop Performance

My brother is planning on selling his PC and getting a laptop instead for gaming (he wants portability). His budget is no more than £1000 and the best he can get appears to be an i7 based laptop (4710HQ or 4810MQ or similar) paired with a GTX 860M GPU.

His desktop PC spec:

AMD FX-6300 CPU
8GB DDR3 1600 RAM
2GB Radeon 7870

How does an i7 4710HQ & GTX 860M compare to his desktop PC when it comes to gaming? I know it'll probably be a bit slower, but how much slower?

Cheers :)

Difficult one to try and quantify. All I can say is you are never going to get anywhere near the price/performance with a laptop that you get with a custom built gaming rig.

A quick, rather crude, comparison suggests performance will be relatively similar:

CPU comparison
GPU comparison

Hope that helps

EDIT: I don't know what laptop he is looking at but I strongly recommend the Lenovo Y-Series

The CPU is basically a Core i7 4770 running without turbo thus it will be quicker than the FX - 6350 in most applications.

The GPU is effectively a downclocked GTX750TI, slower than a HD7870 by some 25%.

Real world if CPU limited then the Laptop will take the lead, anything else the desktop will be in front.

To match or exceed the desktop you would need a 870M minimum.

laptop will be quicker on the CPU but slower on the GPU.

Your're looking at a 10-20% frame hit probably on new games (eg far cry 4)

But if its older games he plays (or CPU intensive games eg strategy) you wouldn't notice much difference IMHO

He plays a variety of games including Battlefield 3 & 4, Dayz (standalone), Facry 3, Crysis 2 & 3, Skyrim and Tomb Raider etc..

Ok, so it seems the GTX 860M might be a bit weak. He doesn't really want to spend much more than £1000 on a laptop. How does the Radeon 8970M compare to his desktop 7870?

Managed to get a gaming laptop for my brother from Cyberpower for £1068. It should hopefully be able to match or even beat his PC for gaming.

17.3" 1080p LED screen
Core i7 4710MQ CPU
3GB GTX 970 GPU
1TB SATA HDD (7200rpm)
8GB Kingston DDR3 1600 RAM
Built-in 2.1 Dynaudio Speakers
Intel AC WIFI
Killer E2200 NIC

Will this be a match for a stock AMD FX-6300 with a 2GB Radeon 7870?
