Hey peoples, I'm looking for a good gaming laptop for my mate. He wants it to play bf3 and similar.

As he's in the navy a good gaming laptop is what he wants, for packing it away during inspection and the like.

Now I know we don't know what we need for bf3 but I'm thinking that most of the stuff thats out now will run it.

So my questions are:

Similar CPU to i5 for laptop? (I know there are i5 laptop processors but how good are they compared to the desktop versions)

What sorta laptop GPU would we be looking for in a... laptop?

I'm thinking 8+gig of ram would be smart.

and lastly, 19+ inch screen.

What could you get for these budgets:

£500
£1000

What would be the sweet spot for bang for buck but still play bf3 (theoretically) at med-high?

you wont get anything will bigger than a 17" in budget but even a 17" at this budget will have too many compromises for gaming in BF3 imo at high detail. there is only one laptop that ticks all the boxes at just under £1k the gaming msi laptop from ocuk. it may be a 15" but it is an i7 and has a 1080p screen. also has the ati 5870 in,

nothing comes close to this spec in budget really esp when you take in warranty, speed of shipping and the benefits from purchasing from here. plus reliability of the msi machines is v good

Other options I can see is getting a laptop of the Dell outlet store, Can find a good Mx17 R3, might be able to get something really good if your lucky for around the £1000 - £1100 mark. Along the lines of 1080p screen, 580gtm, and a SSD.

If you really want a good gaming laptop your looking around £1000-£1300, and dont think you will be finding 19+ screen, probably 17 and some 18.

He wont get all those at that price, could get the gpu and screen, but it wont come with the ssd, or he could get one with ssd and the screen but it wont have the gpu.

as much as the alienware are powerful machines, the cost of extending the warranty, and i would not just want 1 year warranty on something that costs that much, given know longer term reliability, make them a joke.

the cheapest MX17x r3 on the outlet with 3 year warranty is £1300 inc vat and delivery.

you also have the hassle of dealing with the outlet and dell lol.

hence my money is on the MSI and OcUK (2 year standard warranty iirc),

a £500 budget, best you will get new is a del xps L502 15" intel i3 with nvidia GT525 in.

if you want to do some serious gaming on a laptop and want a decent big screen you either have to spend the money £1500 ish or make the compromises.
