Hi all,

Looking for some advice on a gaming laptop for under £2200.00 @ 17". I'm looking to run Black Desert Online on it and other games, but mainly BDO. Would love to run it at medium to high end GFX.

System requirements for BDO are:

OS: Windows 10 (64-bit)
Processor: Intel Core i5-650 3.2GHz
Memory: 8 GB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA GTX 970, AMD RX 480
Network: Broadband Internet connection
Storage: 39 GB available space

Cheers

If you'd consider a 16" (QHD+) display then I'd recommend both the Legion 5 Pro or Legion 7 with an RTX 3070, or 3080 (if in budget). These are the best gaming laptops of 2021.

Pretty much all 17" laptops have a 1080P / FHD Display which is a downgrade compared to the Legions, or has a 4K Display (Razer Blade Pro 17) which is overkill for a laptop for gaming.

Or you could wait a few months for the 2022 laptops to release. These are being announced now at CES.

I will say that the HP Omen 17's always give good bang for buck (and a cheap warranty extension); I've been very happy with the 4 laptops across 2 models I've had between me and the wife. They typically provide the full rated Max-P part in the 17" for GPU as well, and have been very stable and reliable.

Definately worth a check when the 2022 models land; in my eyes they're kinda the sleeper brand in the UK. I know when I got mine, they were typically way cheaper for comparable performance/specs than the manufacturers more known for gaming laptops (Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, AW etc); and it was the same both times I've bought. Only downside is they also tend to disable the CPU's IGPU so the battery life is short; but it does mean you get the full discrete performance when plugged in, and that is what they are targeting. The BIOS is also horribly locked down; but this is the same across many gaming laptops; and only really opens up on the very top models. Not something I was willing to pay another £1000 each.

Been genuinely happy with them, wouldn't hesitate to buy another; always things that could be improved or extra features they could have but there's no such thing as a perfect laptop in every metric/regards, and they really came through in terms of price:performance! :)

They do some nice chassis, although look around as there are a few that do some good custom laptops, usually based on the likes of Sager/Clevo, Compal or Tongfang Chassis.

Hoping this isnt breaking forum rules, as OcUK don't do custom laptops anymore.

Enjoy, you really won't be upset.

The ONLY thing I would say is that the Radeon 6000 mobile CPUs were announced at CES, due this quarter, with something like 10% average single core, 30% multicore and other power and speed enhancements, over the Ryzen 5000 chips (as they're Zen 3+ based now for the most part instead of Zen 2/3, 6nm not 7nm, and have RDNA2 and not Vega IGP tech). If you CAN wait, it may be worth waiting just a few months :)

They should be faster and more power efficient; I realise that they will likely cost a bit more, but between a performance boost; and likely the machines with them running slightly more advanced technologies/higher specs, it may be worth the wait!
