Hello,

Well i sent my new MPB back yesterday as i just couldn't get on with it and it didn't feel much of a upgrade from my old one. I have decided i want a laptop with a bit of humph, what can play games and Blurays well.

Preferably wanting one on finance over a few months at no more than £900 in total.

Now i have gone to the computer places and checked out there laptops and they have decent laptops but with not a very good gpu compared to some online stores.

Ideally i would like the MSI GX660R that OcUK have for £900 but there finance options are silly. So what laptops should i be looking at?

I like my games to look and sound good! And it has to have a HDMI output.

Thanks

you can get a dell xps 17 for around 800 quid, ive just ordered one, with the i7 2630qm,4gb ram and 3gb gfx, didnt go for the blu ray, but it has jbl speakers on it aswell. paid around 770 quid for it, not to bad.

Hmmm didn't know the xps was decently priced.

What is the 550m gpu like then? Any good? Ain't Dell products notouriously known for breaking randomly and can only really be fixed by dell?

Thanks area.

I really cannot find anything.... The purple shirt shop had 0% interest on there lappys but none of the lappys there interest me and the online stores with with good price lappy's what interest me have stupid silly finance options.... Even Dell?...

Cant win!

Will just have to wait till after are holiday next month and just buy one. Just wanted a finance what could be paid over 3-4 payments for time being. Guess ill have to be patient.

Derrrr.....

Just realised how the 'Buy now,pay later' scheme works. I guess it does help when you actually read the finance faq.

Will have to give OcUK a ring tomorrow about the MSI GX660R!

My MSI GX660R arrived Thursday and it's a very nice lappy.

Bad points..

Poor Screen for the price. Side angles aren't too bad but the front on slightly lookin up or down screen turns negative.
Touchpad is rather bad too (not awful but poor scroll function)
would have happily paid a bit extra for a backlit keyboard or maybe it should have been included in the price.

Other than the above, the rest is fine and I'm happy with.

Thanks for that Montegue.

I seen your post straight away and looked at a fair bit of reviews and they all gave me the same cons about the laptop. They will be very tiny cons for me because if i ever play games or films on it, it'll be hooked up to my tv anyway :)

Got my gf to order me one earlier from OcUK, now just got to wait :)

Anything i should be looking to download when i get it? Bit rusty when it comes to computers these days.

Thanks

It comes with some software already on ie.. Norton IS (60 day trial), some pdf reader (not adobe) and a couple of other things too that I can't recall now. All removed straight away, stuck NOD32 on, Foxit pdf reader. I created a restore point and uninstalled the ati drivers that were on and stuck the latest ccc on which resulted in no driver for the 5870 even tho I had installed the latest CCC. I'm not too clued up on ati drivers having mostly been an nVidia buyer and NV drivers are so simple to install compared to ati ccc.

Hope you have more luck than me there. I restored back to the shipped drivers and tried Bulletstorm demo and it ran pretty damn well on default settings in game. Which were medium/medium/low/medium, the game looked very sharp considering the settings were mainly on medium, 60fps constant and in heavy scenes went as low as 35fps, which I am told that is a game flaw..

Overall though, it's a really nice lappy and does exactly what I bought it for - not heavy game use, but able to play games when I want to when not at the desktop PC.

edit ~ Managed to update drivers for gpu and just ran 3DMark 06 (with the turbo button on *2.9ghz) score 12924, which is a tad more than what was stated on the test run on the buy page for this lappy.

Yeah first thing i will do is get rid of all the rubbish. Do you get the Windows 7 disk with this lappy or is it pre-loaded?

Yeah, i am the same when it comes to graphics cards. I always used Nvidia cards a couple of years ago when i use to have a desktop. Reason why i never bothered with ATI back then as i couldn't understand anything about them.

Well i should hopefully have it by end of the week. Looking quite forward to getting my hands on it and seeing what it can do! Not played a PC game in a few year either. Also looking forward to listening to stuff on it through my 'beats by dre' headphones, once there delivered to :)

Thanks Montegue

No windows Disk, all pre-loaded, although didn't need to use the serial it's there in the battery compartment. Same here with ATI, last two that I had was 9700Pro then the x1950.

First thing a friends asked me, is it loud (fans) not unless you switch the fan setting on. Idle and without fan it's virtually silent - just an heads up on that in case you was wondering :)

The dynaudio sound from them speakers is pretty damn good too, best sound I've heard from laptop speakers. Let us know what ya think of it when you get it ;)

Tried Vantage out too earlier on and temps on the GPU, Vantage Vantage scored 8022 and temp went as high as 55c with turbo on and fans on and as I said previously 3DMark 06 scored 12924

The speakers on the MBP was very impressive so if it is on par or better ill be a very happy man, as sound means most to me out of the lot to be fair.

Will be here tomorrow! Won't be able to get my hands on it till after work! Gunna be a slow day for me tomorrow....

Look around a bit the GX660R is a bit cheaper in a few places and some of those have finance too. Alternatively, if you think you could clear it in 2/3 months on the card won't cost you much different to finance setup etc (it's only compound interest that hurts on plastic). Don't mean to sound like a fanboy but REALLY liking mine.

I rate the purchase up with the buying of my main pc's screen back in '07 in the grand scale of things. I've had a run of decent laptops (tho i've generally gone second hand for the last few years) but got this new on a whim and i'm hugely impressed. Will slowly build this up as far as I can reasonably push it as time goes on (getting a pair of momentus XT's in it soonish. Keeping the original drives in a pristine state and putting some faster ones in + a clean install).

I have seen it on another site for £880, but i have always gone with OcUK because of there customer service. Far better than any CS i have had to deal with.

Just got it out of the box and set it up and got rid of all the rubbish what was on it. Impressed with the design of it, feels solid to! The screen seems fine to me. Audio is also very good!

Will have to go see what games are worth buying after work tomorrow for it, try the graphics out.

Also love the touch things below the screen, though i haven't the slightest clue what any of them do besides the satalite one lol...

Only thing what is doing my head in, is the trackpad! How do i make it so it stops selecting things when i touch it?

Will be able to try it out properly tomorrow night when i have more time :)

P1 button is like a macro of sorts (i think) - Turbo (obvious) next one is the Fan - gaming button (disables windows keys) - wifi - bluetooth - eco modes (different levels of performance *screen, cpu etc) and finally the lights settings.

Yup the trackpad was a let down for me but only slightly.

I have seen it on another site for £880

Yeah I saw it yesterday at a big place not 15 mins away from me for around the same price. Oh well, only 20 quid difference. Just wasted 30 on that Brink game.

Ah just realised you have to have it on charge to use turbo, was doing my head in trying to figure out how to turn it on lol.

Loving it, been trying some demo's out and its eaten them all for breakfast. Been able to try the sound out properly now and the sound is amazing to say it is coming from a laptop.

Any decent games what have come out on pc in last year i should be trying out?

Rather than a laptop bag which screams "i've got a laptop, mug me!!" I prefer to use a decent neoprene laptop skin and a regular bag :) Mine was a cheapo from the auction place but there's plenty around that do a decent job.

I've actually been mugged carrying a laptop a few years ago (tripped from a "got a ciggy" bloke and his mate). They poked the bag (which I landed on) with foot, I said it was gym kit and they left it be. Definitely would have been minus laptop if it was in a shiney black leather laptop bag with "targus" written on it :D
