Gaming laptop

Sorry im new to all this. Would play star trek online well and Star wars old republic when it comes out? someone told me try alienware or rockdirect?

Alienware (Dell), Clevo (used by various companies, Kobalt and Rock amongst them), Asus and MSI tend to produce the best gaming laptops.

A 6970m graphics card is about the same level as a 6850 desktop graphics card, so surprisingly nippy for a 'mobile' platform, and thanks to the new I7's switchable graphics, the machines tend to have reasonable battery life for desktop use.

Any decent gaming laptop will play these, not exactly ultra demanding (well I'm guessing the old republic will be similar to other MMO's).

The MSI laptops on overclockers website offers excellent power for your money. A 5850M coupled with an i5 CPU should any game very well. I went with the alienware m15x, similar performance to the MSI, but was slightly more expensive.

Alexrose1uk has basically named all the companies worth looking at, so just depends on what you want to spend

Thanks guys for all your help. Just want laptop that will play games i want really well with good graphics for good price. Not heard MSI etc before. Had laptops in past like acer which i had never heard before found there support really bad

Most of the above brands aren't really sold in many bricks and mortar stores because they're aimed at a higher performance segment and budget than the mainstream stores usually target.
Probably why you haven't heard of them.

MSI as an example have been around for well over a decade now, I recent skipped a still working P3 machine from 1998 with an MSI motherboard :)

Out of those 3, MSI would get the best value. Value tends to be best with Clevo resellers or MSI.

In terms of cost, I'd say it's usually MSI<Clevo [customisable]<Asus<Alienware [customisable].
That said, I wouldn't say what you get for your cash necessarily goes in that order, as Clevo machines often offer a similar spec to AW for less cash.

The graphics cards in those Dell machines are pretty ropey, and quite frankly, that's by far one of the most important components of a gaming PC, especially a laptop as they're much harder to upgrade.

MSI et al offer machines with much higher specced GPUs. Dell are never great in this regard as they use Alienware as thier premium gaming brand; going for 'Dell' Dell model will get you mid-range graphics at best in the vast majority of cases.

I'd recommend the OP goes for nothing less than a 58** series from ATI's side (if he can afford a machine with a 6970m he'll be a happy man), or a 460+ or higher if Nvidia; or he'll be dissapointed in the performance for a gaming machine.

Me and computers just dont go. Id probably just buy anything

If this is the case bud, then I'd go for the MSI

It will give you the best value/performance for your money. Will play most games at higher settings, with a few demanding titles dropping to medium. No real point in going for the likes of alienware, clevo, asus. They cost a bit more but only really offer a similar performance, but can be customised to your needs.

If you and computers don't go, then don't worry, pretty much what this forum is for asking advice on matters you're not sure about.
