Hi, in the next month or so I'll be buying myself a new gaming laptop. It'll be mainly used for SWTOR however I also will be playing the new Starcraft 2 that's coming out as well as BF3. Any ideas? Wouldn't mind something that can be used with a headset to go on TS3 etc and possibly a BD drive to watch movies when on the move.

I'm actually thinking about a 17" one now, since it will be acting as a desktop replacement during the week. I have my MacBook Pro 13" for lugging around.

Depends on your budget really..

For me, gaming laptop means you get the fastest GPU with a decent CPU and 8GB Ram and min mSATA + 7200 HD or SSD + storage drive.

Asus does the ROG G75 - very expensive.
MSI do 17" laptops, again you need to be really looking at GTX 675 or higher, 7970M is without doubt the best value mobile GPU on the market, amazingly quick mobile GPU.

I've got an Alienware M17x, with a 1080 17.3 screen, 7970M + 8GB ram and HD choices, you'll be looking at £1400+ but Dell customer service is woeful..

Many recommend the clevo, but I looked over them, bland boring design, cooling issues and locked BIOS and if you get the AMD 7970M there was switchable GPU issues, but I think this issue was resolved with latest AMD CAT drivers.

You do need to look at the GPU and screen, but it depends on budget...

I'm not touching Dell. Budget isn't really an issue, though I don't see the need to spend more than £1600 or so. I didn't realise the ATI card was so far ahead.

I don't blame you with the Dell Statement.. Lots are having issues with Dell support recently..

The 7970M is about the same as a Desktop 7850, you can overclock to decent levels, the 7970M seems to run quite cool for a powerful mobile GPU.

£1600 will 100% get you the gaming laptop you want. Have a look and read over the Clevo laptops, if you can get past the bland looks, they are meant to be pretty good... You can spec them up nicely. failing this, MSI have some top end gaming laptops...

Even though I've got an Alienware, I can say the 7970M is a very capable GPU. So really aim to get a 7970M, the 680M is so much more expensive for such little gain..

My money would be on a Clevo. I don't care for the aesthetics of Alienware and MSI laptops tbh, they look like a focus group design by 12 year olds

For £1100 you can get yourself a 7970M, i7-3630QM, 8GB RAM, 750GB HDD
£1450~ you can get yourself the above specs with two 7970Ms
For about £1600 you can get an Alienware which will have much better build quality and little things (sound, keyboard won't be US + £ sign, microphone placement) but the same specs as a £1100 Clevo

I am personally going to buy a Clevo machine today, cannot justify speeding all that extra for little things

You see I've got an Alienware M17x r4 and whilst the build quality is from what I've seen good, Dell customer service is not, and the Alienware is in fact a tad overpriced..

But, it is down to the M17x or Clevo for best bang per buck gaming laptop with the performance to run all games maxed out.

If you've got £1600 then it makes no sense at all to buy anything other then a 7970M equipped laptop, you'd kick yourself afterwards for not buying a 7970M, unless in the next month or so AMD release something that topples the 7970M or Nvida come up with the 690M (dreams lol)

As above, I'm not buying anything from Dell ever again except monitors through OcUK.

Will take a look at what's been suggested and read some reviews.

Hate to say this, but anything with Apple like build quality and aesthetics? I don't like the look of Alienwares at all and to me the MSI range looks toy like in is design.

I'll be making an order within a few weeks. I like the Clevo, but, I think I prefer the look of the G75. Seen one for around £1630, seem a sensible price?

EDIT that is with a 660M. Looking for one with 7970 in at the moment.

I guess it's subjective, but I love the clean simple design of the Clevo laptops. I find Alienware and MSI laptops in particular repulsive.

Yes it is but the Alienware M17x isn't ugly. The Clevo has had some very negative comments regarding its cooling, notebookreview had a long thread about the Clevo and its cooling, and I wanted a laptop which had a 7970m as its price per performance comparable to the 680m made it obvious to me, but wanted to turn off switchable graphics. Clevo didn't offer this, so went with the Alienware in the end.

That Fn F7 option to turn off the HD4000 was worth it lol I don't think the Clevo is ugly, just very bland IMO.

Heard the keyboard wasn't all that great either, yet its meant to be a stealseries?

Cooling issues on the Clevo put me off. I'm really wanting to avoid Dell, so, apart from MSI and the ROG G75, are there any other alternates?

Now you see this was the dilemma I ended up with when I was shopping for a gaming laptop, and it wasn’t easy to decide.

I ruled out the Clevo based on the horrible stories I’d heard about Clevo and their heat solution, basically many having to repaste, find ways to clamp the heatpipes down or tape etc… DIY ideas for a very expensive laptop, and the keyboard was reported to be a bit weird and some hybrid cliclet type keyboard.

The G75 looked perfect, but it doesn’t come with a very powerful GPU IMO. Its good, but comparable to the 7970m or 680m its not anywhere near what these two can provide.

The MSI was VERY expensive but I was considering it. GT70 one with a GTX 680m is £2200 odd or they now do a flex model which is cheaper…

This is why I ended up with the M17x r4.

Keyboard was good, cooling was better and overall it had a good spec and I got mine for £1450, which was a great deal. The 7970m is an excellent GPU.

Sadly my M17x died within 4 hours of use, after some horrible calls to Dells woeful customer service they did eventually swapped the laptop for another new one and it’s a cracking, very powerful laptop that even under load the GPU never goes above 72c, so there you go. Great machine backed by a silly customer support team.

You’ve now got two choices.

M17x r4 – 680m or 7970m version
MSI GT70 one or flex with 680m

Anything else without those GPU you will feel short changed and will always want the 7970m or 680m.

As you don’t like Dell, and I don’t blame you for that, then you’ve pretty much left with the MSI GT70, so there you go…

Gaming laptops are power houses capable of dealing with the massive performance requirements modern 3D games. HP pavilion Laptop is the best for games and I also seen this laptop and I played lots of games on that laptop.

lol, are you joking? what power house HP Pavilion laptop have you been using??

HP probably make the worst laptops for gaming, they are right up there with Acer!
