Anyone using a specific type of 'gaming light' for their room ? Just after some user experiences/idea's.

The office my gaming PC is in got some bright spot lights on the ceiling and a large window behind me, so when I'm gaming I shut the blinds but the ceiling lights are too bright right above the monitor but when it's fully dark I can't always see my keyboard so looking for alternative that's ideal for gaming but still keeps the room darkish.

I've seen some of those LED strips on a stand so was thinking about those, but just wondering what everyone else uses, if anything.

the so called monitor lights always looked in triguing to me. They kinda illuminate the kb and in front of the screen without shining on the screen itself. I've havent bothered yet, i currently just use a normal house lamp off to the side and behind me with a hue bulb. Works well enough for now. Key thing is to make sure it's not reflecting off the screen.

There's a few things to keep an eye over but the primary thing I believe is: Get an extra large black matte mouse mat

If your desk is reflective or light coloured, having under display lighting can be bad as it tends to reflect back off of the desk towards your eyes, so not ideal. Typical remedy for such an instance is to have a black extra large mouse mat to place under the display to diffuse the reflected any under display light or any light from the display itself and only illuminate the keyboard. It'll also help if your keyboard is using (motion detected) backlit keycaps to it makes it easier that way too when it's needed.

If you have external lighting from other sources, then the black mouse mat can also help with lighting from there as well to minimise reflected light going all over the place, but try not to have directed lighting towards the display as mentioned by @whitecrook

Personally I find my backlit keycaps keyboard and just the light from the display (AW3423DWF) is enough to illuminate the keyboard well enough for me to see where everything is when all lights are off.

I use a cheap light bar that sits on top of the monitor, think i paid ~ £17.

Works pretty good, there is a bit of light shining on the screen but not to distracting. (for me anyways)

Have seen ones that cost ~ £90 which may be better, but i was not prepared to spend that much.

I just got a normal lamp mounted so it lights up the space behind the monitor. The light spills enough to get the areas around me, but my backlit keyboard is shaded by the monitor itself and is easily visible.
I used to run LED strips on the back of my old monitor, but the back of this new one isn't conducive to such things.

Wouldn't worry about "gaming" lights
Being called gaming whatever usually just adds cost

You can get cheap led gooseneck lights
That clip onto your desk
Or ones with a stand /base
Can change brightness on most of them
Some can also change colour or shade of white

If your keyboard is on a shelf that's lower
Than your monitor
And isn't an illuminated/rgb keyboard
Then you will have a bit more difficulty lighting that area

Other option
Install a dimmer switch on your ceiling lights?

I have two very old-school "banker" lamps (with the big green shade and gold pull chain) on top of my hutch desk. Soft white bulbs. I don't know what it is about these, but they put out perfect ambient light for work and gamine. They also look classy as heckfire. Possibly nostalgia from tens of thousands of hours spent under them early in my career.
