So Guys,

Birthday coming up & pay day today, I'm looking for a monitor upgrade as my current monitor is great, but it's just a basic 24" with nothing special going on.

I have a setup of 2 x 680's SC with a Intel 3820.

What would be best for a good gaming experience? I saw the dirt cheap 29" LG and am so tempted, but is it the best option here?

120/144mhz Monitor? - Recommendations
3D Monitor? - I do enjoy it, but is it worth it over others?
The LG or other high res monitor?

Help me decide, I play a variety of games & sometimes Photoshop, so maybe an IPS?

Looking at:

YOUR BASKET
1 x LG Flatron 29UM65-P 29" WideScreen Super-Wide LED Monitor £299.99
1 x Asus VG248QE 24" Widescreen 144Hz 1ms Gaming LED Monitor - Black £269.99
1 x BenQ XL2411Z 24" TRUE 144Hz Flicker FREE 3D Vision 2.0 Widescreen LED Monitor - Black £249.95
Total : £819.92 (includes shipping : ).

If 3D is anything like the cinema 3D, pointless then :p

I got the LG one recently (although sent it back and getting another due to backlight bleed) and love it, a bit weird getting use to the aspect ratio at first though!

For me, the biggest decision was IPS VS TN 120/144hz and I just simply couldn't go back to TN, IPS is superior for colours, viewing angles, general image quality etc. But if you are a "serious" competitive FPS gamer i..e cs go, bf, cod then the higher refresh rate would give you an edge over players with 60hz monitors.

Although I wouldn't say I am a competitive gamer, I do play BF4 and enjoy a good session, but if the IPS wouldn't hinder me any further than what I am currently using?

Would the IPS still be as good for gaming as my current monitor (1080p, 2ms, standard Phillips LED) or slightly worse, taking away the better colours, sharpness etc?

Got a link or model number for your Phillips monitor?

IPS monitors aren't as good as TN for responsiveness, input lag, however, with good IPS screens, it isn't something that you would notice the difference in.

I went from a good TN samsung monitor (at the time) to a dell IPS screen and didn't notice any difference. Been gaming on the dell for the last 4-5 years and haven't found it to cause any problems and same with the lg for the brief time I had it.

Of course, the one big advantage of 120/144hz screens is the lack of screen tearing that you would get with 60hz monitors (could use vsync to fix/improve this if you don't mind the disadvantages of using it.....)

Unfortunately there isn't much info./reviews on the 29" lg monitor:

And a review of a different lg monitor but apparently it uses the same panel:

This is what I am currently using since Dec 2011! Didn't realise it was nearly 3 years, it's a good monitor, however it isn't great?

As long as I'm not going backwards I think I'd be happy with this monitor, although 144hz does seem quite nice in terms of smoothness.

I think I'm trying to see what would benefit me more:

LG: A more interesting resolution, better colours by far & sharp quality, can match TN (so to speak)
BenQ: Still 1080p, not as vivid colours, smoother output, 3D for the hell of it?

Difficult decision aha, both would be better though! - I guess I could RMA one if I wasn't enjoying it?

Can't find much info./reviews on it but I imagine compared to other similar monitors i.e. by dell, lg etc. it wouldn't be as good.

I came from a dell u2311h and found the lg a lot better in all areas, when deciding I was hesitant about it as I thought the only "noticeable" improvement would be the screen size/aspect ratio.

Never used 3D on the PC but from reading around, some seem to really like it where as others aren't, think it is one of those things you just have to try yourself.

Both monitors should be noticeably better in most, if not all areas.

Yup you could do that! :D

edit:

oh and if you play any mmo/rts games, lg is def. the way to go ;)

Just started Elder Scrolls Online, plus a backlog of all my RTS games...
Stronghold 3 would look pretty in widescreen! :D

Think I may and go bite that bullet and enjoy a new monitor! :)
Hopefully, don't get the same back light bleed you experienced.

DO IT! :D

There are some games now that don't support 21.9/widescreen aspect ratio i.e. assassins creed so you will have black borders on the side (game screen will be the same size as a 23" monitor), apparently there are tweaks out there that allow you to enable a 21.9 aspect ratio though.

Can use this site to check if games support widescreen

Oh and if you do get the LG display, make sure you use either a display port or DVI-D cable and not HDMI as it doesn't properly support the 21.9 aspect ratio.

I think you should be fine, if not ocuk's/Bailey's support is top notch and will get a RMA sorted super quickly.

Uh oh!

Congrats on the monitor, would love to hear some feedback about how transitioning to the superwide from 16x9 went. I currently run 2 16x9 monitors (formerly 3 but had to cut back to 2) and wondered if this would be worth purchase.

It is rather weird at first going from 16.9-21.9 but for games and especially films it is superior. It just feels more immersive.

For browsing, word documents etc. I resized the windows to about half the screen size and placed around the middle of the screen.

I still have my second 19" monitor for dual monitor setup though as it is better for proper multi-tasking especially when you are playing games on the main monitor.

Mine has just been collected from DPD so I'll probably not get my replacement until Tuesday/Wednesday (assuming they are back in stock by Monday.....), going to be a long weekend :(

Just gone for a LG Flatron 29UM65-P too!

I think this should excel in what I do the most, racing games (in car view), FPS games, and films. :)
