Gaming Monitor to use for PC and Console

Hi there,

I recently assembled a very nice gaming desktop for myself after almost a decade, having said that I'm still using a very old display monitor with it. And it is time to upgrade the monitor now. I'm looking at G-sync enabled monitors from Asus, Acer or Dell to go with my Geforce GTX 1080 Ti.

Having said that, I do want to use this monitor (if possible) to play my PS4 too.

So, the aforementioned monitors have the following connections at the back panel:
  • 1 HDMI --> PS4
  • 1 DP --> PC
As the Playstation 4 only has an HDMI port, it will have to be connected through the HDMI.
The 1080 Ti has HDMI, DP and DVI outputs. The DVI is pretty much redundant as the neither of the monitors support this connection. So I'm left with HDMI (which will be serving the PS4) and DP. Ideally I would like to refrain from going to the back and switching the cables every time I want to switch playing between PS4 and PC - so I would prefer to connect the GPU to DP. This way I'll only need to switch the 'channels' if I'm switching between console/PC.

Would this be a problem? How does G-sync work? Does it have to be over HDMI or does it work regardless of the connection (i.e. DP)?

Thanks in advance :)

G sync only works with DP.
Run HDMI for the console and DP for the PC. Monitors have input switch buttons on them. Press it to switch between devices. That's all you need to do.

Remember to set up G sync on your new monitor when you get it. It doesn't work automatically.
