Hello all,

I'm looking to upgrade my monitor for my birthday in a few weeks.

I currently have a LG 27GL750-B 1440p 144hz NanoIPS
I quite like the look of a 34" ultrawide but the LG equivalent is very expensive at £749. Especially when my current monitor cost under £300 last year.
I want to stay IPS really and mainly play apex legends and few other games.

When I say upgrade I want a bigger screen (ultrawide) or maybe consider a 32" for a lot less

Any recommendations welcome, want to purchase soon to make sure all is ok for my week off work to game.
Cheers

So a few monitors I've been looking at (all ultrawides)

Iiyama G-master GB3466 £399 VA

Samsung Odyssey G5 LC34G55TWWRXXU £449 VA

Benq EX3415R £594 IPS

MSI 343CQR £699 VA

LG 34GN850 £749 NanoIPS

Any input on these models? I've never used or seen a VA panel to know what to expect, only had a AOC TN years ago and my current LG NanoIPS

Also I'm running a 5800x with a 3070ti FE

VA has lot better contrast making image look overal far better in dimmer room illumination, but at the expense of:
Horizontal gamma shift called as "black crush" which crushes darkest shades to full black from straight angle with shades coming back to visible when viewing from side. (would also show in dark forum themes)
And very slow dark shade transitions known as "black smear".

Though don't use that LG as guide for IPS:
Contrast of 27" 2560x1440 LG "Nano-IPS" is garbage from 15+ years ago and there are plenty of IPSes with 40+% higher contrast.

Those last monitors in your list actually push into 32" 4K price range:
Gigabyte 32" M32U 3840x2160 4K SS IPS 144Hz 1ms FreeSync/G-Sync KVM HDR Widescreen Gaming Monitor (SKU: MO-00Q-GI) = £719.99

Yeh I did see that they are in 4k territory, however I'm concerned my 3070ti would struggle with that Res.

So removing the LG from the list, would any of those ultrawides be worth a buy? I do game in the dark actually.

So a little update.

I've decided against a ultrawide and now looking at either 4k@144hz or 1440@240

Budget up to £700
Mainly Apex legends, and other FPS with the occasional singleplayer

Yea I don't like ultra wide, it's personal preference I could see advantages with desktop applications browsers etc, but for gaming no.

Do you really need +144hz?

Admittedly I've never gamed at higher than my current 144hz, even way back in the early days on games like counter strike on am old CRT monitor that could pump out FPS.

I'd be I interested to hear if it makes a difference going from 144 fps to 240?

You are also pushing your hardware all much harder going for very high frame rates

I think choosing and buying a monitor online is tricky, you really need to see it in person.

I think as I'm not straight away set on something that it's probably a impule buy, so will keep my current 1440 144hz monitor and maybe look at a case/fans change instead, potentially a new chair too

I think you'd be wasting your money on new monitor anyway.
