My mate keeps telling me to get a proper gaming mouse instead of my $20 Microsoft Wireless.

Is there any actual benefit from so-termed gaming mice? What's the difference?
It has a battery lifespan of well over a year (only remember them actually going out once so far), works fine on my tabletop and I can stack headshots using it in UT2004, what's there to justify the $150 pricetags of gamer mice?

My current mouse:

They have a proper laser (much better preformance) , adjustable DPI levels , adjustable shortcuts. they ARE worth the money. got a logitech g9 myself.

What's the difference between a regular optical mouse and a good laser mouse? Also, what's good about having more DPI?

From what I understand, more DPI means the mouse is more sensitive to movements, but when I'm in the middle of a game and aiming, I can't make precise adjustments either way, because I move the mouse too fast.

I guess I'd like to try it out sometime but I don't really have the money to throw away. Trying to justify a purchase. :D

I say tell your mate to get stuffed and keep your mouse!
It sounds like you like it and it does all it needs to for you, I don't think your gaming will improve by shelling out more for a Laser.
Don't get me wrong, I have A G9 and its the best thing I ever bought! But, I wanted a mouse with on the fly DPI adjustment, side buttons, free wheeling er, wheel and it sounds like you don't.

iv just got a razer copperhead, popped in a phat fishing weight inside for more weight and the difference between this and my old logitechs is night and day, probably the best upgrade for gaming iv done for a couple of years :)

If you're an FPS gamer, a gaming mouse is like the most important thing you'll ever need, and a mousemat too.

Bit of advice, Razer's are prone to brake, if you dont wanna spend money buy a Logitech MX 518 for like £20 or less, it's a legendary mouse and a lot people still swear by it after all this time.

Hmmm .. Im gunna go agaisnt the grain here and say .. gaming mice arnt THAT much better! Sure they have a better lazer.. and you can move up DPI but when it coems down to it.. the only thing thats important are the buttons on the side of the mouse (to me anyway)! I am an avid FPS/MMO/Strat/RPG gamer. In the past i have used a £90+ mouse and a wilkinsons Budget £4.99 mouse! Now i am a FUSSY person. Im the type of person who will spend£200 on a new GPU just to get 2FPS mprovment on games. Yet i used(untill recently) a logitech Mouse (Logitech MX 518) which was around £19.99 from amazon and i had NO problems with it what so ever! (Apart from it looked Ugly) I decided to upgrade to a razer copper head for £40 (mostly for the custimizable side buttons and the Blue LED (as it went with my LED glass desk lights)) .. and apart from the buttons i cant see anything diffrent from the £19.99
. After saying this to a friend (who has a £90 mouse) he told me to come around and try his for an hour and ill see the diffrence. I took him up on the offer.. and after an hour on MW2 & UT3 i STILL cant see the diffrence. Tbh I think a lot of it is bragin rights "OH HEY! I have the latest £100 mouse from So and so". I honestly belive if you spend over £30-40 for a mouse, your well into the zone "paying for the brand name"

IMO Get a mouse that suits you!:) Dont get to stuck on getting 'The latest super gaming mouse'

Oh alright, so pretty much it's just fancy peripherals.

Well, looks like I'm keeping this mouse for another good few years. ;)

If your are after something that will help with gaming, you can not go wrong with with z fang keypad! Its a small keypad that sits next to your mouse and has the keys position where they are more helpful than if there on a keyboard, they have keys labled, Larger Up,Down,Left, right keys, left and right handed, etc. It REALLY helped me out over the last few months while playign FPS games and MMO! I personaly think youd get more from it then a gaming mouse :)
P.s takes a day or two to get used to it tho ;) heres a review and pics :)

I use a Microsoft Laser Mouse 6000.

It might be a bit more precise than yours, but I can pwn with mine with ease and have been doing so for years. I have no interest in getting another till it breaks.

Peeps that tell you that you need better are talking crap. If it works for you and you are winning with it then keep it.

Those that constantly state they need better mice to make themselves better at gaming are basically crap at gaming. A bad workman always blames his tools etc etc ;)

Gamepad seems a bit silly / excessive, my logitech wave keyboard is absolutely perfect for FPS gaming. WSAD / QEF<C / 1234 are the only buttons I use and they're in the right places.

If you're an FPS gamer, a gaming mouse is like the most important thing you'll ever need, and a mousemat too.

I don't really get it. Is a mouse supposed to magically make me a better FPS gamer? I tried out my mate's mouse (on his desk where he uses it every day) and every 5 seconds or so the laser hit a "deadspot" on his desk where it just started making my mouse cursor jump around like insane, drift, move even when the mouse was stationary etc.

That pretty much convinced me to keep on using this mouse. I've been playing the same game using the same mouse for over 5 years and I manage to hit the top 1-3 on scoreboard, so meh.

What so great about those side buttons though? I don't really see what they're good for other than accidentally pressing. The mouse I had before this had side buttons but they weren't working, so I just kept randomly clicking them all the time to entertain myself throughout loading screens etc.

I can't even work in paint with cheap mice anymore.
The sensitivity and accuracy makes a lot of difference.
Even if you don't use any of the extra features still a good mice like g5 or g9 will
be a lot more comfy and put less stress on your wrist/hands due to better sensivity and accuracy.

Buy one, it will last you years (had g5 for 5yrs, still going strong, g9 as well).
