So, my 4 year old laptop and 3 year old desktop both decided they had had enough over the last week. I now need to replace both on a budget.

I've got a working GeForce gtx 460 and loads of hard drives. Am I correct in thinking the 460 is still a semi decent card? Is it possible to do something fir sub 350 and then throw the gtx 460 in there? I was playing games such as far cry 3 at medium settings before my current desktop died.

Cheers!

What do you need exactly? PSU as well? Are the video card and HDD's the only things you want to/can keep?

List your current spec of things that still work, and what case you have.

Things that work
Psu
Gtx 460
Case
Hard drives
Wireless card

Don't work/outdated
Motherboard
Ddr2 ram
CPU

Pushing budget up to 450 now and would ideally like a new case and maybe a 60gb ssd for primary drive if I can fit in.

If you keep your case for now (or stretch budget to add whichever case you want), then you could get an overclocking motherboard*, fast RAM, a good 80+Gold PSU with 5 year warranty, and a great processor and great SSD that are massively reduced this week (till Wednesday morning) and worth snapping up, in my opinion:

* Even if you don't overclock the CPU, the Z87 mobos allow for faster RAM than 1600MHz.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £173.99
1 x MSI Z87-G41 PC Mate Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £79.99
1 x Samsung 120GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE120BW) £76.99
1 x TeamGroup Xtreem LV "Frost Edition" 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C10 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit £59.99
1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £53.99
Total : £454.55 (includes shipping : £8.00).

I included a PSU even though yours works because I don't know which model you have, and unless it's very good and worth keeping, I wouldn't stick it in a pretty good new build like this.

Thoughts?

Thanks. Quite like the look if that build. My psu is a cooler master 500w that came with the case from this site three years ago so it's seen better days. I'll stick with the case then upgrade in about a years time and upgrade the gfx card at the same time!

You're welcome. Your plan sounds good. And I'd put any extra money you come across, towards a better mobo, as that one is the cheapest Z87 mobo OcUK stocks. It should do but can be improved on obviously.

Have to say the 460gtx is ok, but if you want to play anything new at reasonable levels it will struggle.

I have a 460gtx and BF4 on low still runs poorly.

Only going to use it for light gaming so don't mind low settings. Waiting for star citizen so I should have plenty of time to save up for an upgrade before it's released!
