Gaming on a Windows Server OS

Can it be done..? And if so, will the game performance suffer as a result of using a server OS?

For example, will Windows Server 2012 have the same gaming performance as Windows 8?

The reason I ask is because I am thinking about installing WS 2012 on my home server, but it is sometimes used for home LAN gaming.

Yes you can, and no, it probably won't be much different, if anything, it will be better. I use(d) 2008 R2 as my daily OS until 8 came along. You may need to tweak some of the game install files incase they check for a Windows version on install

Would it not simply be detected as Windows 8? The drivers I download would be Windows 8 drivers (for GPU, wireless adapter etc).

Server 2012 would be based on the same code as 8 but with extra things added, some features removed, and strengthened security would it not?
 
Technically yes. I'm talking more about the games. Some (and I can include drivers with this) will explicitly look for the windows variant code %workstation% 6.2. If they don't see that (instead, they'll find %server% 6.2) the install will fail.

You *may* be able to get around this by changing the HKLM>Software>Microsoft>WindowsNT>CurrentVersion>InstallationType from Server to Client

and see what happens. If you face the issue that is :)

I doubt performance would be better, but the difference would be negligible. Also note that installing Server 2012 core might lead to some issues :p:D
