I'm having to buy a laptop to replace my desktop in the coming months but I'm a big fan of pc gaming. The problem is I can't afford a 'gaming' laptop and have limited my buget to around £600. I'm thinking of getting a 17" dell studio but I'm wondering if my gaming days are over.

The laptop comes with a ATi 3650 256mb... do they suck?

I remember seeing a link to a list of the best laptop graphics cards but I can't remember where it was;l anyone know where I might find it.

Should I just give in and buy an xbox 360 for my games?

At the moment i'm playing Far Cry 2. I'm into most FPS games. I fancy trying Fallout 3 and I definitely want to play GTA4. CoD WaW will need playing too.

I'm guessing i'll only ever be running these games at low settings if at all.

my g/f has that studio laptop

it plays the sims and source games [at lower settings]

the ones you mentioned will struggle

cod4 at a push

have a look for a laptop with an 8600m gt. that is about the best you will get for the £600ish mark
Agreed.

A workmate uses a Sony VAIO NR31J/S with a lowly 8400GT with 128mb ram.

It plays S.T.A.L.K.E.R. at mid/low settings quite well and even just about manages Crysis on low.

rest of the specs are:

- 15.4" Screen (1280x800)
- T2390 dual core @ 1.87ghz
- 2gb DDR2

I would imagine the 8600GT would do a fine job on medium settings for a lot of similar games - as long a the resolution isn't too high of course. :)

The site you are talking about is notebookcheck.net :) It ranks all current mobile GPU's in order of speed:

For ~£600, your best bet is the Dell XPS1530 as they all come with 8600m gt's. The cheapest one on the main Dell website is £679, but you will be able to find one on the Dell outlet website for under 600.

cheers for your input guys. I've decided to give up pc gaming for now.... my discission was influenced by a good xbox deal!

I'll probably just get a dell studio laptop for web, FM09 and a bit of work.
