Would it be any good?

Microsoft® Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005
AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology ML-44
2GB DDR RAM 333MHz
100GB 7200rpm hard drive with 8MB buffer
2x 256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7800 GTX SLi graphics
19'' WSXGA wide screen display (1680x1050)

Compared to my current PC:
AMD 64 3500+
1GB Corsair PC3200
7800GTX
Abit AN8 PCI-E

I know laptops have always been seen as a poor substitute for gaming, but I'm off to uni soon and I've no need for a thumping great PC. Can you actually buy a faster laptop than that?

That laptop weighs about 7kg with the PSU, is absolutely huge, costs £2400, 30 min battery life and gets stupidly hot/loud.

Although it is faster

Money is no issue. Would you advise waiting a year before spending?

TBH, I would rather build a shuttle system out of existing parts. Buy the carrier things it will be just as portable :p

You mean wait until just before Uni starts?

Would be worth the wait, cost would drop even though money isn't an issue. More manufacturers would release competing models with improved components/features.

The Shuttle approach sounds better though, option of a faster/larger hard disk and faster RAM.

I'd prefer to see a fx chip or high x2 in it, but for that price it should do a very good job.

I'd rather build a £900 shuttle rig for gaming and buy a £1500 laptop (MacBook Pro?) which doesn't need two people to carry around, looks good and has a battery life measured in hours instead of minutes. That would be a much better use of £2400 in my opinion :)
