hi all, noob here, just wondering how good vista is for gaming? i run linux atm, and havnt bothered to try and get any games working on it, however, when i was running xp, i played games like half life 2, quake 4, etc as well as older win 95 games. will these work on vista? and which version should i get?

thanks in advance! :D

Vista WILL be good for gaming when
  1. DirectX 10 games become prevalent becasue MS refuses to create a DX10 release for XP and older
  2. The graphics card manufacturers sort out drivers for it

XP is currently a better choice for gaming.

I've been running shiv isles and medII full max with great fps on vista. Didn't notice one bit of difference from running the same games on my xp HD. Running home prem 32bit

Drivers and general compatibility are slowly getting much better. Home Premuim OEM is the one to go for. I'd held off for a good while, but ordered my copy earler today. :)

excellent, sounds good. a friend of mine got a copy on the day it came out, a wise move? i dont know. but hes very happy with it! although he doent play games.

i lost my copy of xp, and decided to go to linux. which i love, except for the difficulty of running games on it. i was gonna go back to xp, but no longer have a copy. i didnt want to use an illegal copy, and didnt see the point of paying for xp, when i may as well buy vista!
ok so i kinda get the impression, the games will work, probably fine. but possibly with some driver and other issues?

I have problems with source games losing like 60% of their FPS when I go from 2x AA to 4x AA.

Otherwise C&C3 and BF2142 work flawlessly on max settings, though 2142 gives the "has encountered a problem and must close" error now and then.

Vista was awful for me, i couldnt install some games and i would lose around 30-40 FPS on any game, on XP everything runs much smoother including games, ive got a 8800GTS 640. Only time im gonna install Vista again is when i get 4GB of RAM.

What I like about ATi and vista is that it does not matter what GPU you have it is supported very well I mean it does not matter if the GPU you have is old or new you can be on a 9800 or 9700 ect and have a good time.

but for me Nvidia are bad I have a 8800 GTS 320mb in one system and 2 6800gs in SLI (which I still think are very good cards) They have stopped support for their FX GPU s and if you look at these read me's of these new ish drivers there usually put in about 2 fixes for the 6 series GPU's and about 20 for the 7 series GPU's and about 40 for the 8 series GPU's which are still crap. They don t give the same support to the 6&7 GPU uses unlike ATI which support all there GPU’s very well no matter what they are.

I ran into some issues with LOTRO and Vista but there's a fairly simple workaround - just make sure you don't install/run it from an admin account.
Other than that just make sure you have at least 2Gb RAM but that's not specific to gaming just for Vista in general. A machine that ran XP fine with 1Gb started paging a lot with Vista so upped the RAM to 2Gb and its flying.
