Gaming over Homeplugs

Bigger box!
Hi all,

I've specifically asked here rather than in networking as I'm after gamers first hand perspectives.....

Do any of you game using a console or PC connected to the net via Homeplugs?

If so do you notice any significant latency issues?

I've no doubt that I can browse and stream adequately using them, but for gaming I currently have big ugly wires trailing around the room.
My plan was to spend a lot of money (quoted around £1500) to have a wired network put in, but if these are likely to be good enough they'll save me a lot of time, effort and cash!!

Experiences from both PC and console gamers please?

If it's particularly relevant, the games I play generally rely on a fast connection, i.e. SFIV, CS:GO etc, currently really into TLOU despite being awful at it.

I don't mind sucking, but I want that to be my fault rather than my hardwares fault....

Ta :)

I have my laptop, Xbox One and server connected to a 1Gbps Netgear switch and that connected to a Netgear Homeplug thought to a BT Home Hub. I live rural so my Internet connection sucks (4mb down, 900k up) and I can play anything on Steam with my mate and Diablo 3 on PC fine with absolutely no problems.

I play Forza with my mate on Xbox One and it is perfectly playable with no lagging or issues.

If the power cabling in your home is decent and even better, you have a decent connection to the outside world, then you will seriously have no issues using homeplugs.

Edit, also, have you considered networking your home yourself? £1500 is insane. It's a seriously easy thing to do!

It varies a lot depending on the wiring. In the UK and HK homeplugs were pretty reliable for me in most places.

Here at my flat in Germany they are utter pap, if a neighbour uses their electric lawnmower it kills the connection. I hate to think what the wiring is like! I've just got a good router (Asus RTAC66U) and 802.11ac with external antennae, which is pretty damn good these days.

New build house too so I imagine the standard of wiring and materials should be fairly high.

I've used homeplugs for years and have no problems.
Currently have Xbox One, PS4 and Wii U connected and works flawlessly

Zytel 600Mbps homeplugs here, work fine with no lag. PSN reports 40mbps down and 3mbps up on my 50mbps VM connection.

Or the completed opposite to keep costs down?

Just because its a new build doesn't mean its good ;)

I've used TP-Link ones for about two years now, they work well though Devolo are also very good. I have had two of them fail (bought as a pair) but TP-Link replaced them under warranty. As mentioned, the speeds you'll get depend largely on your house wiring and what other electrical devices are plugged in. Best thing you can do is get the fastest ones you can afford; I have 200Mbps rated ones but am considering getting faster ones because transfers from my PC to NAS are quite slow. Ignore the speed ratings on the box, you won't ever get 200Mbps, 500Mbps, 600Mbps etc from them but the higher-rated ones should still be faster.

If you can afford to have proper networking cabling etc put in then I'd be inclined to go that route for the sake of future proofing, but powerline adapters are at least worth a go otherwise.

I used Billion BiPac plugs (200) previously in three different houses without problem. Now using Devolo dLAN 500 AV Wireless+ (three ethernet ports so i can connect sky+PS3+PS4 :p) in a new build and no complaints again.

Would thoroughly recommend.

I have some tp-link home plugs, I live in a new build home, and they work fine.. however it is purely down to the houses wiring.. not all houses will perform the same, so home plugs sadly are very subjective... What works well for one doesn't mean others will get the same experience..
