Gaming over PowerLine adapters

Hi everyone,

The router in my flat is unfortunately as far from my room as possible (we only have 1 phone jack). Running ethernet from my PC to the router involves going through the lengh of the hall, half the kitchen, and right down the living room.

While this doesn't hugely bother me, my better half does not exactly appreciate it.

I know that going wireless isn't exactly going to keep my ping down, when it suddenly occurred to me I could use PowerLine adapters.

Does anyone have any experience with them? Would they be better than wireless in terms of gaming online?

Thanks :)

Due to my distance from the exchange, my broadband is unfortunately capped at 5mbps :(

Is there any point on getting eg 200mbps powerline adapters? I'm not transferring/streaming files between PCs, this would only be for games, so I'm presuming my broadband would therefore be the bottleneck?

I use them for pretty much the same reason, and they do work really well. You don't need to get mega high bandwidth adapters if its just for broadband, but do make sure that you read a few reviews on the ones you're interested in. Good networking kit often lasts through several PC's, so its worth being careful.

Yeah I'll have a look at a few reviews, thanks. Can't seem to find anything at the moment on how/if my ping would be affected compared to being directly wired to the router..

Ping may drop by 1 or 2, if at all. Its a far better option then wireless, which would totally rape your ping.

The low speed adaptors are fine for your needs, but if you can get the faster ones for a few £ more, might be worth considering. When i got mine ages ago the price difference between the speeds was quite big.

I would say these are a good buy for the cost.

What everyone else said. Powerline is so much more reliable than wireless.

Heck, it's about as portable as well if you're inside at home. One plug at the router and you can move the other plug as needed, not a problem if you're working plugged in anyway.

I coughed up £80 for my 85Mbps kit about 5 years ago :(

Mind you that meant 5 years not on wireless so totally worth it :p

Just to add my pennies worth, I had poor bandwidth on my PS/3 as it was miles from my wireless router........so I purchased the ones that have been recommended above.

My 12yo set them up with ease and other than they are slightly bigger than I would like they are great.

We now stream HD TV easily.

A little off topic, If you already have a set of power line adapters set up, can you add in another pair? or will there be inference ect

Well from what I understand and its seems to say this on the leaflet in the box you can just add extra single units......and then pair it to the network.

I think you only ever have one connected to your router but I may be wrong.

But I am assuming once you go decide on a specific make/speed then you need to stick to it......but again I am guessing.

We will be adding another in my sons bedroom......so I will let you know when we do.......but he has to save the £20 first;)

Aslong as they are using the same Homeplug/powerline version then should be fine, as said you can add single/pairs to the same network without any major problems. I will be doing the same for my xbox soon, I already have 2x of the Netgear Homplug 500mbps ones and will add a 200mbps one for the xbox.

Do these have to go straight into the wall or can you stick one in a multi plug extension?

they can go anywhere.

ive got both of mine in extension leads with virgin 50 meg and get pretty good speed's.

it is advised to have them plugged in a wall socket though but sometimes it's not possible.

very interested in these also as I'm in the same situation as the OP, and if I had known about these earlier I might not of got rid of my ps3 as I could get a decent stable connection

They say and I know that extension leads impact speed......but they work.

Wireless I was seeing 3mbps, in an extension lead 10mbps but in the socket 16mbps.

You take your choice!

I wouldn't really be possible to have them in the socket, but if they can work from an extension it has to be a better solution than the 10m network cable I have jammed under doors and around the sides of a room.
