Gaming over WiFi?

Always been an ethernet man myself, but does anyone actually game over WiFi? When I tried it back in the day it felt slower and less stable than a wired connection. How is it these days? How do speeds compare to a wired connection?

Depends, if i put my router at the other side of the house i can see pings of 500-1000ms whereas in the same room i get only a few ms higher than i do wired. However our channels are quite congested here and in the evening occasionally things go to pot if all the neighbours are home using theirs.

You can get away with it but if you play things like FPS games you'd be better going wired or even homeplugs just in case.

Yeah thanks, I use the homeplugs at the moment as I'm a couple floors up from my router and they work pretty well.

Planning on moving out shortly and just wondering if I'll stick with them or try WiFi. Will do a a bit of trial and error I guess.

Wifi has come a long way with dual band and wireless n. I'm currently using a 300Mpbs wireless n connection that is about 40% faster then my previous 500Mbps powerline adaptors.

my wireless is faster than my 500mbps powerline

but i have a very high end router.

i am moving out soon and will be looking to go wired in my new house.

I've never tried gaming on Wireless because I have no need too. It's a pain having it going up the stairs, however we've hid it under the carpet so it's not noticeable until it gets into the room with the PC.

However my PC is the only wired device in the house.

My point is that there are plenty of ways of hiding cable so try and go wired as it'll always be the best bet.

WiFi is often subject to fluctuation in latency and packet loss. I would test the quality of the connection by pointing WinMTR at your router before you start gaming.

I've had to use it sometimes on laptops and consoles and most of the time it's fine (never any real issue with laptops tbh), but on console it tends to be too slow for downloading stuff and cuts out when it's raining etc., guessing it's a cheapo receiver so not a fault of wireless itself but I have and probably will always prefer wired and had wireless turned off whenever I'm by myself.

I will be going wired when I got to Sky Fibre Pro, mainly because I don't want to shell out for N rated wireless cards for both my PC's.

My WiFi is just as good as my gigabit ethernet, but then I do have a decent router (Asus RT-N66U).
