Hi, I'm gonna attempt my first build, my budget is £1000 for the main rig and Windows 7, I don't need monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers, etc... It will be used just for gaming online, and surfing the web that is all.

Do you guys have any suggestions? I have been looking in the "Guide to helping you choose your components" thread, which has been very useful, I'm starting to get a rough Idea of what parts to choose.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

The board can do USB 3 & 6GB/S and crossfire / SLI @ dusl 8x.

Dropped the SSD and added a second GPU, also the board does not have usb3 or SATA 6GB/S.

Any brand preferences? Ie do you prefer AMD or Intel for CPUs? AMD or nVidia for graphics?

I was looking at Intel and Nvidia and possibly a 480 or 2x 470's would the ATI 6870 be a better choice? Would running dual graphics cards be considerably louder?

Thanks RJC for your two suggestions, would a 650w PSU be okay for a dual graphic card system?

Yes, will be fine, I run the i7 overclocked with 2 5850 in crossfire and this pulled 430w from the mains ~

This is what I had come up with previously -

EVGA GeForce GTX 480 SuperClocked with Backplate/Bracket 1536MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with MAFIA 2 (015-P3-1485-ER) £317.24
Intel Core i5 760 2.80GHz (Lynnfield) (Socket LGA1156) - Retail £139.99
Asus P7P55D-E Intel P55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 Motherboard £103.99
Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Triple Channel (CMX6GX3M3A1600C9) £99.99
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-00599) £82.24
Antec TruePower New Modular 650W Power Supply £69.99
Antec 300 Three Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case - Black £69.99
Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD103SJ) £43.49
Sony Optiarc DRU-870S 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - Retail £17.61

Total : £959.22

With the spec you put together above, a lot of it is very good. The i5 760 CPU is ideal for gaming, the PSU is a nice one, the case, DVD drive and HDD are solid performers.

However, with the imminent arrival of the AMD HD 6900 series in the week of 13th December, I would strongly suggest waiting until then before making a decision on graphics cards. If these cards are as fast as predicted they will make for a good option and drive down the prices or competing Nvidia cards (perhaps bringing the excellent GTX 580 into reach).

Also, I would go for this motherboard instead of the ASUS. The ASUS's 2nd full-size PCIE slot only runs at x4 speed - so not very good if you ever plan to run dual graphics cards. This board would be the one I'd go for - it can run dual graphics cards at "proper" x8x8 speeds.

Also, please bear in mind that we are currently living in the shadow of a major CPU/motherboard launch. Intel are releasing their next generation "Sandy Bridge" CPUs and motherboards on January 5th 2011. These will supesede the existing s1156 CPUs and boards (like the i5 and P55) and arrive at the same price points. If you are in a position where you can wait - I would.

I decided to take your advice and wait for Sandybridge, I've updated my basket and my budget, how does this look -

EVGA GeForce GTX 570 SuperClocked 1280MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Intel Core i5-2500 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail

Asus P8P67 PRO Intel P67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard - (Sandybridge)

GeIL 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz VALUE PLUS Dual Channel (GVP38GB1600C9DC)

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-00599)

Antec TruePower New Modular 650W Power Supply

Antec 300 Three Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case - Black

Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD103SJ)

LiteOn IHAS324-32 24x DVD±RW ReWriter SATA - (Black) Retail

Total - £1,033.31

I also wanted to add a SSD to put the OS on but I don't know which one and what size.

if you get the 2500k you can overclock it crazy :) only the k-series overclock unfortunatly but otherwise it looks like a good spec

Hi mate, that build looks good, but if you want to overclock you will need to get the K version of that chip. As for the SSD how about this one:

also change the 570 to a Asus one as its £45 cheaper and get the i5 2500K

Or you could go for the Palit version which is even cheaper:

The suggestions from Zaim look fine to me, just checking if you're thinking about going for SLI in the future though as it might be pushing that 650W PSU a bit if you do?

Cheers mate, ye i forgot about that power supply, I wouldn't run two 570's on that, 750W would be ideal for two 570's.

This XFX one would be good:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-005-XF&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=1497

its £6 more than the 750W version so it's worth the extra

thanks guys for your speedy replies, I thought about getting the Antec TruePower New Modular 750W Power Supply in case I wanted to go SLI in the future, would this be sufficient?
