Hey guys,

Looking at buying a new gaming PC to replace my old PC as it runs slow now, it's 2 years old or so.

Old PC: http://puu.sh/gEIYl/431cd6eb56.png

I'd like the PC to be about £600/£700 but don't mind spending a bit more for a good, solid build. As long as it runs games smoothly at normal settings I'm happy. I use two monitors, don't know if that matters.

I've never built a PC before, so a case that's easy to build in would be perfect. Does anyone know how much OCUK actually charge you to build the PC?

Thanks in advance.

That's still a pretty high end CPU. Get yourself a decent GPU, another 4 GB RAM, and a SSD and your experience will be transformed. And if it's still not good enough, they can all carry over to a new PC.

Consider a Galax Geforce GTX 970 for £260 or MSI Radeon R9 290X for £250 as the GPU, and a 240 GB Samsung SSD for £105. There are cheaper SSDs but I prefer Samsung.

Total cost will be ~£400

Thanks for the reply man, will consider this option. However, I want to keep my old PC for my brother. Probably just going to give it to him.

So I'm still looking for a spec for a £700ish PC.

my 2p.
this will be a massive step up from your current pc
i did not include a hdd due to budget constraints, however a 250gb ssd is included
ocuk charges £60 to assemble, so it should be around the top end of your budget.
os included too, and ocuk will install that too as part of the assembly charge (as far as i can remember, but ask first)

Looks good man, cheers. I don't actually need an OS should have probably said that.. so that gives me some more money to spend on components.

Do you actually need to have a DVD drive these days?

Last time I bought a PC people just put there OS and maybe a few games on the SSD, is it ok to store anything on there without affecting the performance of the PC? If it doesn't then 250 GB is more than enough for my files, I have an external HD for music and video's.

£60 doesn't seem like too much to get someone that actually knows what they are doing to build the PC, however it doesn't look hard to build it yourself. Decisions.. decisions.

Not really a fan of that case, can anyone recommend some other good cases that are easy to build in?

This looks good man, in other threads I've noticed that there is a CPU cooler included. Do I not need one also?

Would this case be alright too? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-158-CS&groupid=2362&catid=1489

Yes, good case for the money. Swap the PSU for this (price went down today):

1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £51.95

And you will want an aftermarket cooler if you intend to overclock, yes. Otherwise, the stock cooler will be fine to begin with. You can add a nice cooler later on. Important thing is to get the best "base" in for the budget right now.

The case will be fine, most of the time it is personal choice :)

The cpu will come with a stock cooler which does limited Overclocking, have a look at the cooler below:

Also the Superflower PSU linked by Danny has been reduced and go with that.

Ok, so I just ordered this build!

I asked before but, is the SSD ok to store anything on? I guess if it comes to it and I run out of space I can dump stuff onto my external or use the HD from my last PC?

Decided to go for building it myself, we'll see how it goes. There's so much information on here so it should be easy. Can I just say, the support on these forums is fantastic. Thank you all for the quick replies to this thread and for helping me find a build I'm happy with.

Oh, I ordered a CPU cooler for when/if I need it in the future. Saves on postage.

Thanks again guys!

Hey! Don't knock the case, Corsair do some legit stuff!

Have had some people say "you should have got the i7 devil's canyon" is it really worth the extra £100? That's like 2/3 the price of my graphics card. As far as I can tell, the i5 won't have any problems running games on good settings even in intense fights/scenes.

You are correct, for gaming the extra "cores" wouldn't make a difference. I have an i7 for other reasons, and I have found that it helps a *tiny* bit (in new AAA titles), but I wouldn't buy an i7 for just gaming purposes.
