Hello Gents,

Been a while since I have sign in here. Had 3 kids and time is short, so overclocking has been on the back burner.
Away out of touch and little time to get in touch with the latest kit. I need buy parts for a gaming rig for my son for Christmas. We will build it together Christmas day :). Budget around £500 ( Know it will not be the best) I am looking for advice on the best bang per pound, Motherboard, RAM, CPU,GPU and PSU.
We can use his old case for now (ATX) or he can use his Christmas money to buy his own.

Also big shout out to all the old school clockers :) You know who you are, are you still here posting?

Thanks in advance to any of you that can offer help.

Cheers John

I'm in a similar boat, having dropped out of the PC building/overclocking world for the last 8 years and slipping into the overpriced and underpowered world of "gaming" laptops due to having to move around a lot.

I'm finally looking at a budget/mid-range PC at the mo and i've gone with an i5 4690k, z97 mobo, 8gb ram and 650w PSU (this combo appears to offer best performance/price). I'm still undecided on graphics cards.. it's a toss-up between a new R9 380 (the xfx one) or a used 280x or 290. Don't know if i'd rather have the performance (280x/290) or improved thermals and power efficiency (380).

I know i could spend less and get an equivalent performance fan cooler on the CPU, but i like the aesthetics of the Corsair H55.

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Corsair H55 57.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Motherboard: MSI Z97 PC MATE ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Sandisk Ultra II 480GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Storage: Western Digital Blue 3TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: XFX Radeon R9 380 4GB Double Dissipation Video Card
Case: Fractal Design Define S ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: XFX XTR 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (64-bit)
Case Fan: Corsair CO-9050012-WW 37.9 CFM 120mm Fan

This'll be a good base system

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £520.65
(includes shipping: £11.70)

Assuming you don't need drives. Get a decent cooler later when you want to overclock
