Gaming PC also running media stuff?

I'm chasing down a couple of options here... Basically, I want to get a dual monitor setup, with one main monitor and the other doing some monitor use and some TV use. The various monitor/TV combos like the Samsung SM-225MD are an obvious choice... But that'd leave me in the weird situation of having my secondary monitor being much nicer than my Belinea 22", which would have to be the main one.

I'd really much rather get a nicer (24"?) main monitor and relegate the 22" to secondary/TV duties... Which would mean if I want to use it as a TV, it'd have to run through the PC of course. I don't know an awful lot about this, to be honest, but TV cards seem pretty inexpensive these days. But then, I wonder how much of a performance hit I'll take if I'm gaming and running the TV through the PC simultaneously? That's my main concern.

Option 3... I can throw together a media PC out of spare parts and fit a TV card to it, and just run 2 PCs.

Obviously this is a wee bit handwavey at the moment, I'm just trying to work out the basics but this is stuff I've not done before so any help (or good reading!) would be a huge help...

Cheers folks.

If you're a pureist and want unimpeded gaming performance and an uninterrupted TV experience, then Option 1 is the way to go. But, I have personally tried Option 2, and with a reasonable GFX card and CPU it's very workable with the added benefit of having a PVR at your fingertips.

FYI, My setup at the time was an ATI X1900GT and C2D6300, with a 24" and 17" screen.

I'm running a 7950GT just now, but an upgrade to an 8800 of some sort is on the cards anyway so I think that's probably not a big issue, provided the concept's not fundamentally idiotic at least :D Thanks for that, very helpful!

No probs, an 8800 would run fine but it depends on your gaming tendancies. If you expect Crysis on 1080p res to be as equally slick on a PC dealing with dual screens and an additional TV overlay then it's Pete Tong time. Compromise a little on resolution and/or detail and there's no reason not to enojoy both.

I'm not a big FPS fan anyway, which is why the 7950's lasted so long... Strategy and RTS games don't tend to cane the graphics card.

Right then, guess I should find myself a TV card. Thanks for the help!
