hi

im new to the forums and im looking to build a budget system for my sone birthday. he will be 14 and has already informed me that the r9 290x is the card that he wants as apparently that will do him for a few years gaming without any upgrades.

however the cpu and motherboard seems to be a dif ball game. ive noticed this bundle

and was wondering whether that would be fine to run the 290x without any sort of bottleneck?? i know the 4690k can be overclocked etc but knowing my son i want to avoid this as i can see him coming down the stairs telling me he has frazzled the cpu or board or even worse.

however he is a mad twitch streamer and claims that possibly the fx 8320/8350 may be a better cpu for him.

games he plays are bf4, gtav when released cod AW along with a modded skyrim and games like that.

ideally i would like to get him the best possible gaming pc that would last as long as possible without upgrading.

reading previous posts this is for the tower only no need for a keyboard or mouse, windows monitor etc etc.

also this is the case he likes

many thanks in advance for any help or advice offered

Hi and welcome.

What games and resolution is his monitor?

Intel usually have a better solution than AMD at this sort of price range.

games are bf4, all cod games gtav when he gets it plus things like far cry assassins creed etc. basically any newish games that are released. he games at 1080p but was considering getting him a 1440p super widescreen monitor as he keeps asking if he can get an eyefinity(???) setup but i dont fancy stretching to a pc and 3 monitors for his birthday. he mentioned amd as he loves to stream on twitch with his xbox 1

Problem with that case and board bundle is the different form factors of the board and what the case supports.

Can you go over £700?

is there any similair type cases, rason being is he doesnt actually have that much room anymore. hes already sitting with a ps3 & 4 along with an xbox 360 and x1 with 2 tvs and a monitor. its hard to describe but the way his shelves work im not sure a tower would fit in. think im being picky here but he doesnt have enough room for another desk.

Add a 290/290X to the above spec and thats a small cool looking case for a kid?

Also maybe the Crucial BX100 will be back instock within 2 weeks.

You may or may not need the DVD drive either.

----------------------------------------

AMD FX CPUs have no good mATX sized boards so you are stuck with ATX and normal style cases.

ive just showed him that case and he really likes it. thnx very much for the help really appreciate it. he says he doesnt need a dvd either, they are so 2000s lol. one last thing is that case fine for cooling with a 290x in at???

It has a bottom and rear 120mm fan included, the gfx card is up in the roof section (the board will be inverted inside) and there is mesh on the top with space to add another fan or two.

ok thnx and my son has just asked me if there is anyway that the cpu will bottleneck the gpu at all and how would that cpu cope with garrys mod on dayz????

DayZ is a mess of a game, poorly coded.

garys mod will run fine.

The only difference between that i5 and a 4670K/4690K is the core speed and the unlocked multiplier, it will be fine.
