Greetings,

I am looking to build a micro ATX skylake build, to replace my very much ageing Core2 system (9 years of good service so far!).

Primary use is for gaming. I'm keen to go down the G Sync route
at a later date, hence the NVidia GFX. No need for peripherals at this stage.

Will probably conduct some mild over-clocking, but nothing overly crazy.

Main criteria really is something relatively future proof, that will be able to take a GPU & CPU refresh in a few years. If I can get close to the same 9 years from my Core2 build I will be very happy!

Budget is around £1200, preferably less!

I've come up with the following, what do you think/will it work?

Tempted to go with a smaller SSD, but I know how windows install files can grow over the years hence keen for the extra headroom!

My AMD Athlon 64 single core win xp rig is still going from a Nov 2004 build, only thing I’ve replaced was my view sonic screen after it started to play up last year with a new ASUS 27” flat screen. Was going to get a new rig last year but was waiting on Elite then thought I’d just wait more and get better hardware. Not played games in years well since I stopped playing BF2 PR mod in 2007-8 think it was. I have been buying games on sale in steam so have a few to play when I do get a new rig. Elite was backed on KS so its waiting as well.

Think I want to push for a similar rig all be it I think I want more 32Gb Ram and a 980ti card. I’d be happy to spend £1400-1500 early next year to get what is priced at £1800 just now. I could wait till Dayz is released but then 2018 is too far off lol.

Good luck with the Build. Like myself there should be a world apart difference on the new Machine and OS win10. Poor old Girl just handles browsing, musicand my pictures these days and some of my Email as most is now read on my phone.

You definitely want to swap out that psu. The EVGA G2 650W as mentioned above, or the EVGA GS 650W are both much better options.

If you are only doing a mild overclock then a cheaper air cooler would save you some money. The Alpenfohn Matterhorn pure edition, Coolermaster Hyper Evo 212 or Raijintek Themis are all good budget coolers.

You can also swap out the WD Black for a Seagate to knock another few quid off.
