Hi there!

So recently my birthday passed and I've been saving up to finally replace my 7 year old retail PC with something a bit more.. 'special'. Obviously my Intel Core 2 Quad and Nvidia GeForce 8500 are out of date long ago by now. :P

I have approx. £750 budget for the tower, with an additional £100 spare for a good quality monitor. These can be combined of course if the total is worth paying, that's just what I've assigned myself to.

The primary use is gaming, with the higher end games being Battlefield 3, Borderlands 2, etc, but also for MMO's such as TERA Online and League of Legends. The secondary use is video editing, as it is a big part of my university studies. Basically the PC needs to be able to handle fairly demanding tasks. I'm not too fussed about the gaming graphics quality, I'm no perfectionist in that aspect, but as always: higher = better. I would like to be able to play most of my MMO games at high settings, as those are the ones I spend the most time with.

For the PC components, it's been a long time since I have built a PC so I am unfamiliar with the new recent releases. I do have a preference towards Intel and Nvidia however. I would like to aim for a i5-3570 build, I don't plan on overclocking right away, but having the option for later would be nice. For graphics and the rest, I need plenty of suggestions. SSD is optional but not required as I can buy one later when I have more money spare. I also prefer air cooling, I don't think I could invest so much into maintaining an optimal water cooled build.

For a monitor, around £100 would be perfect as long as it has HD ability, after having HD TV and playing my PS3 in HD for so long, I don't think I could settle for less.. I'm thinking around 22" for the size. Again, suggestions are welcome!

I have speakers, keyboard and mouse already. I also have a Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade Anytime disc, but I am not sure if it's possible to use this with a new formatted PC, so I may need Windows 7 as well.

Finally, I don't have the money fully available just yet, but I should be ready within the next 2-4 weeks. Since my dad is giving me some money to help out, he said I need to have a final cost for him.. it's hard enough giving an estimate let alone a solid figure.

I would be building the PC myself with a friend after I ordered everything.

Looking forward to seeing some replies and help.
Thanks in advance!

If you can come back when you have all the money that would be better since deals here change weekly.

Yeah I figured that, and I was going to wait. But I'm still very interested in seeing some suggestions so I can come up with a solid build. I made a topic before, but never had a chance to check up on it and I got denied in the end anyway.

@tamzzy: Thanks for the reply, looks pretty good. I feel a bit bad being so behind on all this new stuff. I could drop the SSD for a later time? Or is it better to start with one? Never actually had one in any of my PC's but I've heard they are really good to have.

@tjlld: Thanks as well, looks really good. Needs a motherboard I think though? Mine is way out of date. Yeah, it's a bummer with the cashback offer on these monitors right now. Though I could probably buy one and some other stuff in advance and get the rest later. I have about £300 right now. Maybe it's worth it to do this though?

You are going to need to buy an OS unless you have windows xp/vista lying around to upgrade from.

You've been a member a while but you are low on posts. At 100 you will qualify for free P&P, that's something to work towards whilst you are saving for a month or so. You could use the free developers copy of windows 8, if your copy of 7 doesn't work.

This will be a little over budget and money could be saved but it's just to give you an idea how to balance the build out....don't forget the £60 cashback ;)

* i5k with 3 year warranty and stock heatsink good for ~4Ghz. Add an aftermarket cooler if you want to go higher (£25 approx).

* SLI/Xfire capable mobo (dual GPUs) 3 year warranty. 8GB of RAM at a great price with lifetime warranty, you could argue 16GB would be better for video editing, gaming is happy at 8GB.

* PSU is fully modular which means better airflow and easy removal of the unit. Has enough "juice" to SLI the GPU. 5 year warranty

* 660 GPU is better than the 7850 at BF3 and some other titles that favour nvidia. You also get CUDA support which your editing software will most likely support. The CPU also has Quicksync support to assist video encoding too.

* Large screen & SSD with cashback, 1TB storage all with 3 years warranty.

Hope this helps, any questions feel free to ask away :)

Thanks all for the posts so far!

@Tammz: Yeah, I noticed, fail on my part, fixed in edit. xD

@tjlld: Sadly I don't, so yeah I'll have to add Windows 7. I'll update my main post in a little while. I may be able to get a free copy through my university however, so I'm going to see how that goes on Monday, free stuff is always good. :)

@Hono: Thanks for the build, really like that one. Don't worry about going over a little bit, as long as it's justify-able, I'm happy to to try and get a little extra towards it. And I'll work towards that for sure, free P&P sounds good to me. :) No questions so far, but I've been writting all these builds down to refer to, and yeah by the end I'm looking at around £1000 total, so you're pretty much spot on with that. I just don't plan on having £1000 available any time soon as I have to pay a lot towards uni travel expenses, so I just want the essentials for now, and add the extras later. Also, where would I find the developers Windows 8? Haven't really been keeping up to date with it, might also be a good option if I need to cut back on Windows 7.

@Idle: Thanks for yours too, yeah I usually check every week to see what the special offers are, if I end up losing out a little because of having to wait, then it's something I'll live with, it's not too much of a big deal.

I'll probably check back on Monday, hopefully with good news that I can perhaps buy everything sooner. Considering to buy the monitor shortly though just to benefit from the cashback deal. Also didn't expect so much help so soon, so thank you all again. :)

That would be a good idea, makes sense.
