Gaming PC build?

Usually I buy package, but this time I want to build it myself.

I've taken parts out and replaced them, but I've never really understood beyond, either it will work or won't. I need to change that so if anyone is willing to suggest a build and talk me through it I would appreciate it.

The roles of this PC is prominently Gaming, Game Design and Video Editing.

Any suggestions?

EDIT: My budget is £1000, but I would prefer to stay around £800 or less. I will be able to supply the monitor and other hardware.
