Hi, i am looking to build a pc for gaming which will be primarily used by my son in fortnite , gta5 etc and ill do a bit of video/picture editing when required , the build will commence around christmas but ill pick up parts as i see deals and offers through out the rest of the year.

i intend to build outside the case install OS etc and pull it apart again so he can learn how to build and maintain it himself (hopefully a 10yr old will find it fun without wasting gaming time on os install etc).
The budget will be around 1k but as far under that as possible please!.
To begin with we will use the spare tv as a monitor utilising hdmi (32"@1080) but if i see a cheap ish 24+" monitor come up ill grab it.

Current spec (its old, very old, was higher end in its day a lot of hard earned went into this now ancient relic!):

Cpu: x2 4400@ 2.7 - to be scrapped.
Mobo: dfi nf4 ultra d (sli modded legend on big toes bios) - to be scrapped
Gpu: errrr something with hdmi lol- (8800gtx died)-scrap
Ram:2gb ocz platinum @2.3.2.5 & (removed) bh5 @ 1.5.2.2.5(dont get those timings onddr4!)scrap
Hd1 (os): 128gb sandisk ssd - possibly use for games?
Hd2 (mediastorage) 320gb mechanicl drive- maybe keep.
Psu: corsair hx620 modular - old but never pushed worth using? It has quality internals but its age puts me off got it not long after release and wasnt cheap either!
Case: nzxt lexar brushed stainless effect- good case but lacking cable managment -scrap

I also have a pair of 500gb drives almost brand new i can use.

I want something upgradable so am thinking AMD damn you intel and new mobo every flaming generation!
something like:
Cpu:Amd 2600 - o.k so not a single thread beast but cant justify intel prices for a 6 core+
Mobo: suggestions? Reliable, stable with overclock options?
Gpu: nvidia 1060 6gb -thoughts on this?
Ram:16gb team group vulcan, maybe? (Christ the price )
M2 or big ssd: 240gb+ suggestions?
Psu: seasonic/ superflower- what wattage do you suggest?
Case: ill let the lad choose this, he like the phanteks enthoo evolv, expensive taste like his mother! :D(have to admit i had my eye on it to;) )
Os: yeah ill need one of them!
Mouse & kb: budget friendly but o.k for gaming- suggestions?
Have i missed anything?

Although its a way off yet ill try to document it at every stage including my lad building it and create a project log further down the line.
Thanks for your thoughts and input.

TLDR:
Lad 10, gaming pc, no monitor req, 1k budget (ideally under) , go :D.

SSD can be certainly reused, though you own't fit many today's bigger games onto it.
That 320GB HDD again is likely very old model and extmely slow by any measure.
(+always keep backups of anything important)
M.2/NVME or SATA doesn't make much any real world home use performance difference so look capacity, pricing, warranty etc in those.

For memory you would definitely want to wait laiter for maybe little decrease of prices.

PSU is certainly old enough to be considered as having done enough for its price.
Also by todays standards its efficiency would be bad and neither its performance is up to date.

Seasonic Focus Plus Gold is where price meets features/performance.
550W is easily enough for that level graphics card.

If fixed cables aren't problem Bitfenix Formula would be good one.
Antec Earthwatts Gold Pro is semi modular version of that Seasonic.

In most parts its really hard to say what's good for the price when you aren't actually assembling PC now.
Though for example PSU could be put into use now.

Your budget is rather tight on this, 6 core overclockable with scope for future upgrades, lots of ram, and then a case / OS combo that use 25% of your initial budget makes it challenging without compromising on something.

I'd suggest dropping a few bits from your spec, keep the core requirements of 6 core, high ram etc, but forget about overclocking / future upgrades and use a cheaper case. By the time you really need a CPU upgrade even AMD will have moved on to a new socket and in my opinion it's just not worth worrying about CPU upgrades unless you are going to do it every year or two. Assuming you keep a 6 core chip at least 5 years we will probably be on DDR5 ram and numerous other improvments that will require a new board anyway.

With that in mind, I'd go for something like the below. If this is too rich for you the easy option would be to swap the 1060 for a 1050ti and knock an instant £100 off the price.

Thanks for the suggestions so far great input from you both, i think ill base it on the spec above and pickup parts as they come up if i go over budget along the way then so be it!
Thank you for the replies.
