After you guy's helped me spec and build a pc for myself (which is still running very nicely) its come the time where my nephew wants some help to swap his aging laptop for a gaming pc. He's wanting something that plays COD, BF6, Rust etc. So new gen games mostly.

He has keyboard, mouse and monitor already.

He had originally sent me a pre built pc, which was the following specs. But as with some of these pre builds, it's not listed exactly the model etc of the components -
  • Intel Core i7 14700KF
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070
  • Intel B760 Chipset
  • 360mm AIO Liquid Cooler
  • Cooler Master MasterLiquid 360 Core II
  • 64GB DDR5
  • Power Supply Our Choice 850W 80 Plus Gold
and was coming in at £2000.

Think i've managed to talk him out of having a prebuilt and look at the options to build it him/our selves.

I was maybe thinking of something like the following. Obviously you guy's input and knowledge will be very much appreciated :-)

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,764.86 (includes delivery: £11.98)

There's room for movement on price up or down, depending on money saved and if there's little or more performance gain.

M-ATX as it's a preference of mine, it also has more decently priced motherboards available currently.

The case I've listed actually has fans.

Comes in at £200 cheaper but features a 9800X3D so will be slightly quicker.

I'd not bump up to 64gb of RAM in the current climate unless he really needs it for some reason, for gaming that's unlikely.

perfect, thanks for the suggestions. I'll put this across to him. He did mention something about the RGB side been chroma compatible, but that is all totally lost on me lol.

So unfortunately due to work then me going away, my nephew has left ordering too late for me to help build him one. Yet he is still after a pc, so has been looking at pre built ones. He sent me this last night

really struggling to see what to offer to him, especially with the way ram prices are going

The falcon 7800x3d is better but Windows is not selected in the options so need to add £110 if you want that but you could install it yourself and buy a key for £10.

Yes, I took that out for him to save money.

Don't know the difference on graphics cards and if it's worth adjusting any of the components in the build?.

The 9070XT is faster than the 9070, there's little notable difference between brands.

I'd spend an extra £50 to change the 1tb NvME to the 2tb WD Black SN850X, 1tb isn't a lot of storage these days and prices are going to skyrocket for SSD's soon too I expect.

The 850 is a very competent gen 4 drive with DRAM.

good shout, hes changed the case and the storage to below, with final price coming in at £1700

Phanteks XT Pro Ultra ATX Case Tempered Glass Window, Black

WD Black SN850X 2TB SSD M.2 2280

The pre-built PC's will be using existing/old stock that's been reserved at old prices I suspect, the cost of RAM has skyrocketed and storage costs are starting to go up too.

We actually saw similar during the lockdown, the price of GPU's became so ridiculously high it was often cheaper to buy a prebuild than build yourself if doing it from scratch.

Pretty understandable, so at this minute. He's not too bad off by buying a prebuilt for mid entry gaming needs.
